[Air battles] Is mouse/keyboard controls competitive?
Like the title says. I am limited to mouse/keyboard, and since I'm new, I obviously am terrible. I just want to know if with enough skill, it becomes competitive?

in arcade or realistic mouse and keys is actually better (mouse aim is akin to a 4th gen jets fly by wire system, but you get it for everything)

joystick/HOTAS only have advantages in sim where mouse aim isnt allowed

HOTAS aren't even good because the game won't recognize the good HOTAS. Only the garbage thrustmaster t1000 and other garbage ones. Plus, it's still very arcadey in ARB anyway, so that's where mouse/keyboard shine.

dont know what you are smoking because i used a saitek x55 for years, it even had a default profile for it...

granted like most default profiles for a HOTAS it needed a lot of customisation but thats true of every game ever

In all modes, it's way more accurate than a controller or joystick, and if you go to Sim and use TrackIR with a Mouse Keyboard, you are a god of the sky, but still, it takes practice.

hate to break it to you but its the track ir doing the heavy lifting there, it helps us stick users just as much and joystick was already better in sim

HOTAS is ok if u want immersion but even in SIM, you cannot beat TrackIR Mouse keyboard combo.

i dont know why you are adding track ir as something specific to mouse & keys because its a separate system... hotas beats mouse and keys without track ir and its not even close, add track ir to both it will still beat it... it doesnt magically make mouse and keys better to a greater degree than it does hotas...

if anything its the other way, its literally called Hands on Throttle and Stick because it puts all a pilots controls in a single place so you dont have to move your hands at all when looking elsewhere during combat. properly set up every control i could possibly want i already have my fingers on, no key combinations, no keyboard zone conflicts from trying to mash too many

Joystick might be better for manoeuvring, but the mouse is better at aiming.

that doesnt work in sim mate... mouse aim is disabled which is the only thing that makes mouse and keys better in arcade/realistic, you dont get a free fly by wire system to do the actual aiming for you and have to control your aircraft like the rest of us. aiming and manoeuvring in sim are one in the same

you are stuck using mouse joystick, literally mimicking a joystick control inputs with your mouse. gee i wonder which is better, the joystick or the person trying to use a simulated joystick with their mouse

Mouse can be used in Sim and its deadly laser-accurate

its literally called mouse joystick mode by gaijin mate... because it literally acts like you are dragging around the head of a joystick with your mouse... there is nothing about that which is better than the real thing

TrackIR with Mouse keyboard in Sim is the sheet. It just takes practice.

track ir is 'the sheet' as you put it, and you are just coping with the mouse and keys

ya Manoeuvring in Sim with a Mouse Keyboard is a bit awkward but once you learn it in practice you're hardly going to miss anything to your front. The Finesse you can get out of a $10 mouse sheets on a $500 HOTAS.

tldr; mouse and keys copium with an odd addition of track ir as if that is somehow less useful to a hotas user
