The AIM-7E has a delay before it starts tracking the target so launching it below 4km to target will likely cause a miss.
10km is the max you should launch it. Any further than that and it'll lose too much energy to have a high kill probability.
The AIM-7E-2 has the same distance principles, but you can fire it much closer to a target than the AIM-7E since it starts tracking as soon as it leaves the rail. Minimum ideal launch range is 2km in a headon. You can get away with 1.5km if they're flying away from you.
