No. Japan, France and UK are the worst nations to start with. I highly suggest picking something out of the rest, preferably one of the Big 3 (USSR, USA, Germany).

japanese tanks are basically like hardmode, they are smaller so little space to seperate crew so you'll get one shot more often. their guns are typically horrible. no armor. japan is mostly played in a support role.

I do not recommend Japan as a first nation. They have a lot of jank in their tree, especially early. Your first nation (and this is just my recommendation) should be either USA, GER, USSR, or CN. GB is packed with solid shot which is hard for new players to work with (though their reserves do get APHE), IT and FR are memes (I think FR gets early heavy tanks? But those don't edge you towards playing properly) and SWE has all of their best shells packed behind rank 4 mods which means you'll have to deal with a generally weaker shell for a lengthy time. USA, GER, USSR, and CN (by virtue of CN getting everyone else's stuff) are great nations to start with

I'd say Italy is still a valid choice for a starting nation. They're not the most mobile things in the world but the armor and guns have done me well when I was doing the nation for the 50 vehicle challenge.

Play whatever you want first, don't let people tell you not to.

I'll give you one warning though: Minor nations (Not USA, Germany, Russia) tend to be "worse" than other nations in general and their vehicles are over tiered and have high repair costs for no real reason. You will suffer, but Japan has some pretty interesting and unique vehicles especially during the WW2 eras. They aren't very good at high tiers though, but they have a fun low and middle tier!

This is awful advice. In general, you should play what you want but there are definitely nations that are better for new players to learn how the game works with and JP definitely ain't that.

While everyone is free to play what they want first, the OP specifically asked people for advice and this is one of those cases where first impressions can really shape someone's attitude towards the game in a negative way if they pick the wrong place to start.

Japan has some thing that are killer and some things that are best not spoken of. at 4.7 you get real killiers and if you buy the ChuNu II at 4.3 you can grind

i would always recommend new players start with one of the big three, that is Germany, US and Russia. They are just more fleshed out and tend to be easier to use

some of the trees like UK and France are absolute hell starting out, while i would argue in the long term they will make you a better player you lack the shells to easily one-shot-kill targets, you have to actually know your target, where you can penetrate, and systematically take them apart which is not new player friendly

then there are the real minor nations like japan and sweden, while they are perfectly usable if you can identify the good vehicles the lack of options leads them to be frequently overlooked so its mostly older players that use them which comes with the expectation those players are above average and have a deep reserve of silver lions, while not universal these nations vehicles can be ruinously expensive to repair for someone making rookie mistakes

Japan is straight up ♥♥♥♥ and ball torture for new players, due to having paper thin armor and guns are not great either.

Like others said, the Big 3 is a good place to start
USA is for the most part a jack of all trades-nation. Having light tanks, mediums as shermans for days, couple hevies and tank destroyers. Cons is that it doesn’t reallly have alot of hevies, except 75 mm jumbo sherman and 76 mm ridiculously overtiered jumbo, until late war hevies and unlocking your 7th sherman isn’t very exciting.

GER I would recommend first, as it is a bit more forgiving and interesting with alot of diffirent tanks since you have powerful guns and lots of armor, but you lack speed and light tanks for the most part.

Russia, diverse, focuses on mediums and hevies alot, with not many light tanks. They also have horrible AA and little to no gun depression, so you struggle to fight in terrain with alot of elevation.

Japan was my first ever nation and while I did enjoy the early tiers it got to a point where you couldn’t do much later on but once you make it to the ST-A3 area it gets more fun

I actually felt like I did pretty good with UK. I started doing Germany, and then moved to UK pretty early.
Japan and France are notably more difficult. Guns with lower penetration values and worse armor tend to make up a large amount of their early stuff.

US, USSR, or Germany are better recommended. China too as its sort of a sampler tree of US, USSR, and in the first two tiers, Japan.
