I find it a little dull because it really is just a rangefinder game
Like most modes, the lower BRs are funner imo. Naval has the interesting situation however of having two tech trees in one mode, the coastal ships, and the bluewater. Coastal is pretty fun until you start seeing destroyers become common. Coastal ships win battles just by capping, but that is about it, most of the time ships won't get close enough to torpedo until closer to the endgame.

Big ships are pretty fun, but when you start getting to heavy cruisers and battleships/cruisers, the maps start to take a massive dive. You go from maps with terrain to maneuver around and use for your advantage, to wide open oceans where the next 25mins is just holding down mouse and adjusting your range every few seconds.

i very much enjoy it, it also allows for a much greater variance of vessels in a match than you would think as opposed to ground and air where using something significantly below the match BR is not likely to be competitive

because of objectives often being placed in amongst archipelagos, ports and generally shallow water even at 7.0 (current highest BR where the best battleships we have sit) a 1.0 boat is not only viable but can actually win the match, because as ships get bigger they get much less mobile.

So we see a nice division of labour with larger boats slugging it out keeping opposing big ships off our team while those of us in smaller boats are actually getting objectives done. I main a 7.0 lineup with just a single 7.0 battleship i rarely actually spawn and yet still frequently score top of my team in the 5.0 destroyer i prefer

EDIT:

The best coastal boats can do work, its not every match but literally won a 6.0 match (i think it was anyway, i was using a 5.0 lineup at the time and definitely got up tiered to some extent) with a first spawn of a 4.3 coastal boat yesterday taking and holding all three caps solo using islands for cover and zoning out cruisers with torpedoes i kept reloading in caps even when the rest of my team was wiped out.

Yes, it does not dissapoint. Fast moving coastal combined with the deep see big ships makes for a multifacette game

It's basically the same as ground but waaay slower paced, since you get one-shotted very very rarely - spawning right into a torpedo salvo is a thing yes, but again rare.

In both modes you have cover, need to know the range to targets, need to know how to aim and where to aim at, and also need to know which ammo is best suited for killing your target.

The differences?

In naval there's not only shells but also torpedos, you have your own powerful (or not so powerful) anti-air on your own ship which acts automatically (more or less accurate), and "map-knowledge" is not THAT important as in ground, as water generally is a flat :steamhappy: area, all you need to know is where the one or two "sniper spots" are (where those hang out which think sitting still is a good idea).

Just try it with those Rank I reserve ships, the Russian (I know) or German (I guess) ones are very good starters, progress at first is fast so yu will soon find out whether naval is something for you.

It actually isn't much harder to ammo rack boats, at least destroyer wise. Most players just don't know where to aim, aiming for the front of the ship or the mid to maximize damage to modules. But the ammo rack is actually in the rear of the destroyers mostly. Once you start targeting the rear of ships, you'll get a lot more ammo rack. Dunno about light cruisers and beyond however

as ships get larger into the heavy cruiser and battleships, ranges you engage tend to get longer so your shells when you open up from spawn will be coming in near vertical, so long as you are using AP shells that can get through the deck armour aiming for the stern still works giving you a chance of ammo rack or engine room fire, or go for the bow where their tend to be more turrets so more ammo. its just the mid superstructure where shots are generally wasted given the sheer volume of effectively empty space

To clarify, I had bluewaters in mind when writing this. Coastals are a completely different thing, they can be blasted within seconds and will be blasted within seconds, especially when players just rush around in them without any thought of positioning and of cover.

My bad then, I don't think I've ever ammo racked the early coastal ships. They're too squishy most of the time, and I'm not sure it is even modeled for them. Though the later frigates and stuff, I have no idea, the grind is insane.

Not to disagree with you as such but mostly down to failures of the players themselves coastals can go under the radar of many battleships, even in open ocean conquest mode with no terrain whatsoever i have seen coastal boats score kills because all the heavy sluggers just get tunnel vision and disregard the threat they represent until too late

Ah that's again a different ball game! :steamhappy:

I do remember situations when bluewaters were tunnel-visioned on one target, while a sneaky coastal goes in close and releases a couple torpedoes....

Nothing beats sinking large expensive ships with a tiny wooden boat!

Well it has become very unlikely as the bots are very good in countering that, it still happens occationaly but it has become very rare.

I myself don't like coastal or destroyer battles, as they are pure chaos and more or less depend on who has more or faster firing guns, rarely it depends on good manouvering.

I think the naval game becomes fun with the 5.0 cruisers and above

if you like playing with dead lifeless bots this game is Bot run and feed by cows

well that's kinda the point if you emphasise this point, noone plays and the bots are the majority. if more people play bots become less recognisable and are reduced to being farmable targets.

I wanted to play some cool historical battleships and cruisers like Fuso or Atlanta, but upon seeing the amount of SL and RP required to unlock them (and the ungodly repair cost), I noped out. I started playing WT in 2019 and I have been playing somewhat consistently, yet I am still stuck at t4 tank tree and it is painfull to progress
