up until around 7.0, most players will run with predominantly APCBC shells, as they tend to be the most effective shells for most situations, whilst having one or two HE and/or AP rounds also for the odd situtational encounters.
Later on, its usually just take the best Dart the tank has to offer.
APCR has higher pen but no explosive filler, will require precise follow up shots to disable tanks
HEAT is ok on the early short barrel panzers but once you research the long barrel ones it becomes obsolete as the stock AP offers higher pen on top of not being wonky towards angled armor
That is until you get to see stuff like HEATFS, APDS, or APFSDS, but that won't be for a while if you're low tier still.
I would almost never run HE unless it is a big, big cannon vehicle. Like the 15 Sig kinda big. It is a meme round for them, but for other tanks, it's not worth it. If you fight something light enough that you need HE, you can probably just MG them or use your main gun to hit their crew.
SPAA = Self propelled anti-air. Basically, the "correct" (fancy) way of saying AA.
TD = Tank destroyer
SPAA can be an important distinction because WT has AI controlled static AA which come up for discussion regularly.
SPGS or tank destroyers are like your Stug III A. They have usually no turret but quite a strong gun with either no armor at all or with a very tough front plate. They have the green icon.
