That's not true, any ammunition detonation will kill you regardless of what ammunition you're carrying and different types don't have different chances of detonating (that's actually attributed to the tank, not the ammunition) and the area damage is only affected if it's two-piece ammunition (where warheads are less damaging than charges)
As for OP, use 3BM, it flies faster so it's easier to aim, can penetrate objects, and causes more post penetration damage. I'd also carry some missiles for longer ranges or against lighter targets to guarantee kills.
This is a game with a learning curve
Just because you buy a premium doesn't mean you suddenly are good
The t55am is a great tank for its br ( undertiered but its russian so well..)
You have a nice choice of rounds and some era armor that makes most heat rounds useless against it,since most people aim for ufp so..
Also Either you play more watch some guides and ask for advices or you buy another premium and just learn again that its bad to buy its way past 6.7.
