PSA: Yes, overclocking your Monitor will kill it eventually
Don't be like me.
83hz on 10-year old 60hz panel, RIP. E-waste bad.
(yes, the Brightness was turned down. Lasted a good 6 months @ 83hz)

now I'm temporarily stuck with a 4:3 display like it's 1999.

Well, maybe your monitor almost now matches your name. Lets back it up to mid 80's and get a 5.25 floppy.

A 10 year old monitor took a dump, it's a stretch to claim that overclocking did it in.

A 10 y/o monitor dying from overclocking sounds like someone who's in the last stage of organ failure due to old age dying because they got shot. Thing was likely on the way out anyway.

You don't think an extra 23 fps is noticeable?

Dunno why you even bothered, not exactly a pushing to a esports ready refresh rate lol...

10 years out of a bit of tech is decent especially nowadays with how throw away-ey everyone is about it all. Just look at how many folks throw out perfectly good mobile phones just to grab the latest and bestest model.......eyeballing you Crapple sheep :special:

It depends how much you push it, ive been using a 10 year old 60hz monitor overclocked at 75hz for over 5 years now and it has never given any issues.

I did it for fun, mainly. Obviously had a good run with that panel (Planar). Did not intend to fry it, but no great loss.

It was a noticeable boost, but obviously nothing like the 144hz+ panels very common today.

A 60hz 27" 1080p panel with no sync, it's time it retired one way or another. Went out in a blaze of glory.

I don't think an extra 23 fps is worth the risk.

Worth the risk of what? Burning up a 10 year old 60hz 1080p monitor?
The only possible damage that comes with a stable overclock for any electronic is heat. If you keep this stuff properly dusted and ventilated then it doesn't make a difference.

lol... good point.

I still have a 1080Ti that is overclocked to the max, and all safety features turned off to force it to run at 100% at all times, and that card has to be at least 7 years old now.

Lol I just retired my 1070 that was the same age over the weekend, safe to say it got hammered over those years. It still works fine it just gets loud due to it struggling at my native resolution in newer titles etc. It struggling to put out a anywhere near playable frame rate at my rez at the lowest settings in the new Dead Space remake was what pushed me to finally upgrade to a 3080 lol. I just hope I get as many years out of it as I did the 1070....may she rest easy.
