As to why people play low tier even when they are that good, to many players the vehicles they drive are just stat sticks and their goal in life is to get the biggest shiniest sticks. Some of us however actually care about what the vehicles are and have our favourites we prefer to play rather than join the drones in their endless grind to the top
If you stick around you can be one of those drones always convinced the grass will be greener if you get into the newest and shiniest vehicle released, driving yourself insane as each time you achieve that pinnacle something new is released to knock you off that perch and send you back to that mind numbing grind. Or you could just stop and try to enjoy yourself
Sure it might not be ideal that warthunder doesn't have competitive matchmaking, but you can't just lock experienced players out of playing low tier
It's just different eras of tanks.
You can be a beginner in modern tanks by just buying one.
I prefer the lower tier stuff. Its just more fun. The players typically stay as long as they can and really try. I find the later tiers full of unpleasantness, toxicity and it just isn't fun after like 7.7 where all the tech starts to come in. Thermals see things for you, laser rangefinders automatically aim for you, tanks have full stabilizers that remove the complexities of positioning and peeking and all that. ATGMs, guided bombs and munitions, missiles... all these things make the game play itself. The players don't need to do much for themselves, which removes layers from the game and ultimately (for me) takes the fun from it.
So I play low tier. That's where the fun is for me. I've researched all the things I want, SL and RP are meaningless to me. I just play for fun.
