Speaking in "IRL" terms tanks fitted with heavy ERA like Kontakt-5 would have had a pretty good chance for that to significantly reduce the penetration of APFSDS rounds of the era, although the actual coverage of that armor was only something like 66% of the frontal arc. That means that, in addition to damaged/detonated boxes being useless, there's a chance a bit misses the ERA completely
Of course things like M829A3 and tandem warhead HEAT weapons are going to completely bypass that armor.

Besides M829A3 would completely bypass any ERA.
