8GB is still low for today. If they're using the updated textures DLCs then it will absolutely use more vram to an extent where some cards may actually have a hard time.
maybe its happening because of HQ textures but in my case even with the ULQ settings i was still getting driver hung up error or some hard freezes from time to time coupled with 300 to 1 fps drops, i had no problems with any other games i play then like i said they fixed completely a few major updates ago
yeah thats a bummer. OP specifically mentioned a memory limit being hit though so im banking on HQ textures possibly being used and bottlenecking the card.
while the gpu drivers are getting reset / recovered the game is trying to (re)load the game textures but due to the (ongoing) reset it cannot access the vram thus lowering the texure quality (because it deems the vram just to be full) and causing this (kind of) misleading error message.
so while the error message is 'technically' correct it's deceptive because the actual problem
leading to it was / is a different one
indications of this are that often enough this happens multiple times in one game session
lowering the texture quality more and more (until the game may eventually crash because it's on the lowest setting already and cannot reduce the texture quality any further), this may also happen when the game is getting started on the lowest setting in the first place and some players even reported this problem while running a gpu monitoring software showing the the vram actually wasn't (no way near) full
so this 'error' is ultimately just the result of a problem that happen beforehand
Wait what fixes it? I'm having the same problem right now by launching through steam
