At the moment, the only missile that benefits from this mode is the AIM-54 Phoenix as far as Aircraft go. This mode enables you to track a target while leaving the Scan mode on your radar active so you can see more than one target on your radar scope. The primary benefit of this mode is that the "Tracked" target does not receive an RWR ping, but it will give you Speed and Heading information that you can potentially use to plan an attack.
TWS uses Pulse Doppler logic so it is possible for a target to Notch the TWS lock.
Head On Mode:
We don't have all of the radar settings/tools that are actually available to these aircraft, mostly for simplicity and ease of game play. Game play wise, this is a designation to let you know that you should be engaging a potential target flying towards you, not away from you. You'll typically see it as "PD HDN" on your radar scope, which is the ideal condition to achieve a lock and guide a missile to target while using Pulse Doppler radar mode.
If you need to achieve a rear aspect lock, your normal SRC mode is the best setting to use for such a scenario.
HDN modes have different characteristics compared to normal PD, it's easy to check if you have a MiG-29 (which has HDN and non-HDN modes), it gives you a dead zone up to a certain distance (Non-HDN PD doesn't have the dead zone), stronger head on locks and weaker locks from behind.
