Does anyone know why a 57mm cannon with 100mm of penetration was put at 5.3 on a light tank?

yea, it's not great pen, but thankfully the post pen damage is great and with the mobility you can side shoot just about anything.

Funnily enough, the Puma is almost equally as capable but still sits at 3.0.

I main France and it's one of the few tanks I never bothered acing. Just skip it and enjoy the AMX-13.

Those are arcade values first of all and second of all you don't compare a medium to a light tank. In RB they have completely different roles, particularily for the EBR which is merely just a scout vehicle. The cannon is extremely weak for its BR imo because it just has no self defense capacity against the most popular tanks of its matchmaking, tho its upgraded shell can dispatch even IS-2s side skirts, the problem lies with its armor which is extremely susceptible to airplaine strifes. This combined with abysmally low speed on snow and large profile tyres makes it basically a sitting duck in most situations. This tank should be lower.

Can confirm, in AB the role of a light tank is to die, or hide behind friendly heavies all game. 7.0 italy main here.

Not to hijack your thread but to rephrase the second part of his answer about minor nations. It is the same reason why the Ki-44-II hei is still 3.7 BR for Japan and 3.3 BR for China.

It is literally the exact same plane but they have been sitting at different BRs for almost a year now despite mentioning this dozens of times in the past three "bR bAlAnCe pAtCheS" discussions.

Play major nations wherever possible and you will enjoy the game a lot more compared to playing minor nations...

because it's a minor nation, it was completely fine at 4.3 but hey ♥♥♥♥ france having lineups at 4.7 since they moved a bunch of stuff
