A6M3 Zero 7.7mms - now useless?
I'm new to RB
but I've by now learnt basic leading and how to use the controls well
but this hit me hard the other day
I had already gotten a nice jump on a Bf 109. My first full burst slammed his oil tank, my second burst set him on fire and he was blown away in a ball of fire, and oil.
After retreating to reload, since the A6M2 has a poor amount of 20mm rounds, I encountered a P-39
I know you're probably thinking at this point I died - I was able to turn into him at the last second just as his first burst shot past my head. He overshot and we started to turn fight on the deck
Obviously, Zero > P-39 Airacobra when it comes to turning and I was on his 6 while he was still trying to complete his turn.
I had no trouble staying on his six, no trouble landing shots - but I landed over 10 hits and 2 critical hits, firing over 500 bullets from my 7.7mms. The most I got from it was a damaged elevator. But not enough to put him down. Then a RUSSIAN plane comes out of no where and hails him with gunfire. giving me a lousy assist
To be honest that should've been a kill - I landed 12 hits in total, and only managed to hit something which caused a light grey-white clearish line of smoke to trail from him, and some damaged elevators.
Is there a certain ammo belt to maximize the ability of 7.7s? I've only managed to get kills with my 20mm cannons. With the A6M3 I might be able to secure more kills. But the 7.7mms are very poor weapons, especially at the level that they are at.
I believe the Spitfire also suffers from this initially, until later models, but I think the cannons have more ammo than the Zero.

Thank you

PS: Sorry for the long story - but I think i need to tell the whole story to make it clear 7.7mms are UTTERLY USELESS AT BR 3.0 AND ABOVE
I think the turning point would be ammo belts. I currently am using tracers on my 20s, which is working quite well, and I'm using universal on my 7.7mms. Its not like its got the RoF like the 30 cals or the MG series guns so - using AP in the tracers hasn't been an attractive option.

Personally I only ever run stealth, tracers just give away that you're shooting. Still, the 7.7 is a light enough caliber that it really isn't going to do much. At low tiers they're fine, but I've flown planes at that level that took probably 500 rounds and still managed to fly. I'd suggest making sure that all of your 7.7s are running some sort of incendiary. That way when they do hit something important, it burns.

They're not useless, you just can't be as reckless with them when you're aiming.

Sounds like you're playing arcade - and getting hits and critical hits is sort of subject to scrutiny, as I've seen vehicles lose half a wing and keep flying, seen others tank incredible amounts of fire, and so on.

I find the 7.7's to actually be alright, just learn to aim without the aim marker, and at all costs avoid using them in 3.0 battles and above unless that plane also has bigger guns. gl

I've managed lucky pilot hits with 7.7s, but as said above, better to make sure your plane has more guns that are bigger in higher tiers.

They're good for shredding wing tips and flaps as well.

Though not quite as effective as a well-placed 37mm... And the 75mm...

75mm is amazing

I've actually yet to use the 75mm, I unlocked it, but I tend to unlock all mods for each plane and I have like 4 I haven't gotten to yet, but if its anything like popping B25s with a 37mm, I can only imagine... Love them one-shot fireballs. Too bad they don't come with the ammo or fire rate of the 7.7.

A6M3 has twin 20mm cannons in the wings, with 100 rounds each. Its not the most bullets but with tracer ammo it does wonders against enemy fighters (because of the number of HEF shells in the belt).
The ♥♥♥ 7.7mms are probably the worst in the game - low RoF, where at least english fighters have high fire rates - and a lack of good belts.
I've been using Universal which has been OK, with some I and AI ammo in it.
No I've stopped playing Arcade Battles, but that P-39 took damage to his elevator but was still able to fly. Not fly well, but, he could fly in a straight line, just a little offset.
I'm still new to RB so I'm using tracers to practice leading targets, for my 20mms at least, but they work well with tracers.

Yep they good for knocking out pilots thats about it , you got to aim carefully just spraying the fuselage wont do much .

They're OK for stripping down control surfaces and wings I guess. I'm still trying to get my aim on point in RB.
thanks

Japanese 7.7s aren't very good - much like their Italian counterparts. Use them as support for your cannons.

Flaps and wing tips are the target with high fire rate, low damage weapons. Hit a wing tip or flap and a plane goes down.

Tail is good too, usually a plan loops until they stall and flat spin or they just go straight down to the ground
