This game without a doubt has visually mesmerizing tank and plane details blended nicely with sound effects and music providing an overall pleasing game environment for the era it depicts. But all that glitters is gold, does it justify the inevitable grind? Does the game have sensible achievements? Are the team play logistics balanced and supported by efficient servers?
The menu options take some effort to fully understand, but should be grasped in about 10-20 hours of gameplay. A lot will depend on the individual, but it’s fair to say they can be overwhelming at times if you try to rip through the game. But, that is expected with the vast options of game modes, air and ground vehicles and various campaign and tournament/contests that are available to you. With that said, before playing War Thunder, I would definitely do a bit of online research for which vehicles to earn effectively from your efforts. As you progress about 2/3 through the vehicle tiers they can become incredibly time consuming as you must research, purchase and train a crew before using the vehicle. At times it can feel deflating as you calculate the mad grind involved for owning one vehicle. That is the moment of reflection on whether or not your previous choices were in vain, hence take care to do the online research. A good example from my experiences was the Flakpanzer IV Kugelblitz, it's a rank 4.0, battle rating 7.0 Anti-Air Vehicle. This particular vehicle I recall was around 75,000 points to research (or more), 360,000 Lions to purchase, and another 100,000 Lions to train a crew, just to use it in battle as it comes in a basic model - zero modifications! And, of course, the modifications you will want and need for greater survivability, take loads of research resources as well. The typical 4 man crew takes a pretty steady diet of Lions to develop their individual skills operating the vehicle. The training can be accelerated by using Eagles. Considering the average player may earn anywhere between 5,000-10,000 Lions per winning battle and with each battle lasting somewhere between 10-20 minutes, the effort is real. This can also feel a bit limiting as the mutually exclusive choice prevents you from investing those Lions into any other tank or airplane from other represented countries. The only way to increase the time it takes to gain Lions is to purchase a boost to increase the percentage of Lions during a period of time playing the game. Does the game lack sensible achievements? Yes.
Are the team play logistics balanced and supported by efficient servers? One thing I like the most about War Thunder is that a vast majority of the Arcade and Realistic game matches I’ve played are balanced. There are times were you get completely dominated, but I find that is not the norm. The load times for games is balanced as well. If you want to play for a few hours straight you have a minute or two between matches to grab quickly something to drink or use the toilet, but not much longer than that. The servers in general haven’t given me problems with reliability. However, they may not be entirely efficient, they’re not potatoes, but there is some conflict with regions. Oceanic and South East Asia are going to see pings to European, Russian and US servers anywhere between 230-350ms. Unfortunately, the same holds true for the SA servers. There have been ongoing and unresolved issues with this for some time. It doesn’t make the game unplayable, but having realistic expectations regarding hits or being hit will at times not be in your favour. Are the team play logistics balanced and supported by efficient servers? Yes.
If you’re looking for a game to break up the monotony this probably is not the game for you, unless you simply want to tank or fly in basic vehicles by yourself for a match or two. The menu options are set up for long-term players who don’t mind grinding thru games. The achievement system from earning emblems to tanks is exhausting, even for a full-time player. Considering the release date of the game, it’s on the tail end journey of its glory. It’s a great game for world-war buffs, but not so much for someone with ADHD. Does it justify the inevitable grind? No.
Game rating: 2.5 out of 5.0
Ping is not a problem with the game , packet loss is .
I use a VPN service and get around 250 ping most of the time , at peak times in Australia like from 4pm to 7pm the packet loss can be horrendous jumping from 10 to 80% , its like shooting at ghosts with rubber bullets .
Without the VPN service I would get about 300 to 400 ping but it jumps around a lot and packet loss would fluctuate from a few % to spikes of 50% , the VPN just smooths it out to where its pretty good considering everything .
Im in Queensland Australia , I use Telstra ADSL+2 and Express VPN .
FFS don't post walls of text if they don't at least elaborate on the topic of the thread.
To the OP:
I doubt there will be a server proper for you.
That aside, the issue you described isn't actually a ping issue, it's a packet loss one. I have a ping of about 100-130 on the European servers and 40-80 on US servers, and I still get that issue every now and then. My ping remains stable every time, but packet loss spikes hard.
War Thunder's servers have always had major issue with random packet loss spikes.
no, its not, all you are saying is that just becuase you have bad ping you can still play - i can assure you that what i am experiencing is not playable, i have been told that the issue is in fact packet loss but you could at least put in the effort to only select a small portion of the review you copy and pasted
so the vpn actually makes the network have better connection? i always thought vpns slowed the network down because the data had to go through extra encyption ect.
so what your saying is get a VPN and that will fix packet loss?
