Like any type of such armor - sometimes it may help, but most of the time it will not.

Any kind of armor is good armor. I have the M4A1 (76) spaded and it does look quite cool with the add on armor, tracks are place on the sides and on the turret. It's totally worth it, plus by getting all modifications you get free XP.

I pretty sure there's no M4A3E8, there are only E2s (Heavy tanks) and they don't access add on armor.

Never saved me from anything with Shermans. Sherman armor is so garbage anyway that little extra wont make any difference at all, at that BR they are still all gone shoot through it like through paper.
Got saved by extra armor in Panther though once.

What it protects from the most are hits on an angle, HE shells, and especially HESH. Other then that, not a while lot of use as they are only thin tracks.
