American planes have the highest top speeds and the highest optimal altitudes. Nothing can compete with them when they're at 8km+
Never turnfight, and only do shallow dives- let enemy planes burn their energy trying to reach you, then do hit-and-runs with your superior speed.
In the right hands, American planes are the best in the game, because the faster and higher you are, the more control you have over how a fight plays out. The fight doesn't happen until you say is happens.
In short, American planes take a ton of patience, but it pays off.
As others said, US planes (typically) thrive on altitude and outright speed.
They don't perform well in Arcade because the .50 cals are a pretty weedy armament, compared to even two twenties or four.
So, play RB/Sim, and whatever you do, don't fly below about 15,000 feet / 5km's. Much below that, and you have little to no advantages, in my opinion.
As soon as you get to the later P-38's, The second bearcat, the F7F, etc, it gets a bit better. The F84 and F80C are pretty good.
Plus there is the Bell Cobra line Large cannon, and very good flying characteristics too.
The B-25s and B-17s can be quite deadly to deal with for most fighters too. The 50 cals are known to cause issues for a lot of people in RB and maybe SB too!
The US 50 cals are in my opinion, very underrated. They have the highest chance of catching things on fire and come in very large amounts, so it is easier to hit targets. Plus some planes like the P-38 come with the 20mm Hispano that the brits use to shred things.

That's kind of what 109s do? You defeat them in Energy fighting, not climbing to space. You don't even need to climb to space to defeat 109s. If they're above you, go into a shallow dive, -10 to -15 degrees and build up energy. Once you hit 500 km/h, start engaging them. 109s suck at turning energy into maneuverability, which is what US aircraft excel at. If 109s go too fast, they can't keep up with you in a Yo-Yo because air compression screws their aileron and rudder authority.
