Can someone explain how Hesh works?

For me it´s kinda random how Hesh works. In one moment I pulp the entire crew to mush or blow the tank skyhigh and in the next moment it does almost nothing.

As of now I stick with APDS and HEAT-FS for both STB-1 and Type 74 (C) because I
don´t risk my tank by firing a (so far) fancy HE on something and hope for the best.

You need to use squash-head on large surface areas. if there's anything breaking the plane of impact it's effectiveness is dramatically reduced. Slopes are fine, tiny protrusions or edges are not.

Keep in mind it doesn't actually "pen" at least not in the traditional sense. Instead it uses the targets armor against itself.

Unfortunately. At least as long as the curvature is small in comparison to the caliber of HESH round you're using against it.

Well that would explain some useless shots against T 62 and Type 59 and their stupid round turrets. Not my brightest moments I admit but if nothing else is out of cover ........well I took my chance.

to be honest the HESH in game are pretty subpar compared to IRL performance

Always carry a couple. If a tank is hull down and difficult to deal with, that 105mm hesh round to a hatch or some turret view ports will kill the turret crew no problem

I´ll give it another try when I get a map, which doesn´t devolve into another sniping contest from 1km+ away.

Up to around 8.0 it can be fantastic but yeah it's a bit niche. Right now quite a few people are using it to farm SL with the 1.7 Lancia in mid-tier matches.

I think that's why unusual UnusualGenitals put out a video yesterday of him doing it too.

You can see in that vid that he has to pause sometimes when it looks like he has a clear shot but with HESH he has to wait for the target to present a better surface area especially with that long reload.

On the contrary that can be a good place to use it. Doesn't lose penetration over distance, and the slower velocity allows for a more "lobbed" effect, where dropping a hash round onto a roof can be better

Hesh is not a great shell but think of it as more reliable HE.

Some important things to consider
(1) Hesh does not care about angled armour
(2) Hesh fails when any sort of spaced armour exists eg a side skirt will stop it
(3) No damage loss with distance (Not really relevant as they tend to be to derpy for that)

Hesh is very niche only used for light targets unless you are using a comically large gun
Main apds for general use with a few heat for tougher targets but otherwise forget about hesh unless you dont have a explosive shell as even heat can over pressure

Its been nerfed so many times because A certain nation *Soviets* ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ non stop about it.
