Depends on how casual you mean and what sort of stuff you want to play. If you're ok with playing Bi-planes or reserve tanks for a while then sure it can be played by casual players. But if you're looking to go up the tech tree and play the famous WWII planes/tanks then you'll need to be a reasonably regular player.
If you want to play jets and beyond then you'll need to be quite a dedicated player.
Or you could just spend a ♥♥♥♥ ton of money... Up to you.
I'm not sure if that answers your question...
In warthunder there are pvp modes you can play:
- Arcade
- Realistic
- Simulator
All 3 are available for both tanks and aircraft.
Arcade battles does not involve great knowledge of the aircraft you are flying since everything is less simulated, ammo are unlimited and you just battle others without having to worry too much
Realistic are a medium between arcade battles and simulator battles. Aircraft and combat manouvers knowledge is needed to have an advantage against players, expecially because in realistic you will probably find more ofter people with good knowledge of their vehicles, and expertise in combat. You have only one life in this mode, then if you die, you move to the next battle. Also, enemies, when identified by your pilot or by a buddy near you, will be marked.
Simulator battles are the one created to get the best from warthunder. Battles last for hours, and respawns are unlimited but each time you respawn you need to pay a spawn cost.
Enemy are not marked, and so you need to rely on the best of your knowledge to surprise people (if you are flying), recognize if they are enemy and shoot down them.
An hotas and a trackir/vr headset are basically needed to play this mode.

Fast repair and very different nations tech to select from.
Even Lv 2 and Lv 3 can be enjoyed in that way too.
For me and many others this game is like an abusive substance, and an abusive partner in a relationship rolled into one. You will find yourself crawling back to it several months later, like a vicious cycle.
Of course i'm not you, and i'm just some random person on the internet.
I liked naval for a little bit but the grind is sadistic and you get uptiered thru the nose playing against p2w that you cannot even damage i.e. German M.802 that are destroyers spawning in coastal points, Russian Project 206s that just desintegrate you, or Saetta P-494 spammers (guided missiles in WW2 period), people that literally buy backups to have up to 3 of any of them. Have fun winning those fights with 12mm guns. Bluewater, bigger ships, same scenario.
On top of battle passes, backups, premium vehicles etc, P2W often also train their crews with money, which is something that most people pretend doesn't exist or never mention. That crew by itself will kick your arse, repairing, reloading guns, putting out fires, anything. All this goes for ground and air just the same, if anything ground is worse, bushes are a straight meme.
This game only tends to p2w, f2p is just the cannon fodder so the p2w doesn't have to play bots all the time. This is a cross platform (xbox ps4 pc) yet few players (a chuck of its numbers are also just bots, particularly in less played modes like naval) and abysmal player retention, try playing and you figure out why really quick.
TLDR; "worth for a casual" lulno.
this is the only true answer among all other biased ones, the game is very buggy and im talking about avionics and radar not to mention the immense server lag spikes or overall unbalanced vehicles some get modern missiles others still use the old r60s, and thats only a tiny problem im not even starting with the never changing boring game modes, im also not talking about naval at all in its current state the game is pure horror and those who still play, play the game since the very beginning they dont have a proper opinion, they are only playing because stopping would be a waste of many years grinding.
