Free look question
So I am trying to set up my controls for dogfighting. I can't for the life of me figure this out. When I free look I cant use WASD to control the direction of my plane, it will just fly in a straight line. Is there some control box I need to hit to allow my plane to be controlled while in free look?

There's a.. science to it. It's not really using the freelook to turn, it's more of looking in that direction, the plane turning on it's own, and also using WASD to make the major adjustments. At least that's what I do, holding freelook won't get the same results

At least for me i can hold C and look around while using WASD to pitch and roll, though i do have to look away when i move for the first time while holding C otherwise it does love to track back, for whatever reason looking away from your heading then using WASD will unhook the direction.

I'm saying I cant make adjustments as I look away, I dont know if there's some feature that locks up controls while you use freelook I need to disable.

Since flying is controlled by the mouse primarily, that aspect of control is disabled when using free look since you need the mouse to look around. You can still look for the pitch/roll controls in the options and bind buttons there that will still allow you to maneuver without the mouse. I have pitch up and down on my shift and ctrl keys for use with free look or if I’m manually controlling my gunners. It takes getting used to, but it can be done.

You can also look up the instructor options to disable some of the autopilot and other functions that might take control from you such as the auto-level near the ground one. One of those autopilot options is specifically for manual gunner control. Free look doesn’t really autopilot, it just maintains the course of wherever your mouse was when you pressed the free look key. If you position your crosshair where you want to turn to before pressing your free look key, your plane will orient itself to that location. You still need pitch/roll keybinds to perform those actions while free looking however.

That's the problem, the key binds don't work while i'm free looking, none of them. I basically lose all control of my aircraft while I use it. I have no idea what the problem is, i've been fiddling with my settings for hours.

When I use freelook, I am able to turn and use WASD.

What type of setting did you choose ? Simplified mouse and keyboard or an other one ?

SOLUTION:

Just found it on the forums, if you rebind your freelook to ALT, it disables control while freelooking because its waiting for a second imput (i.e. ALT+whatever, usually some radar command). Delete all other binds using alt and you can regain control of your craft. Credit to this guy:

Use MMB. set free look to when you push and hold the MMB and while MMB pressed and held down, use mouse to look..Keeps hand free for other things on keyboard. To each their own but give it a try.

The reason I don't have free look set to C is when doing turns while free looking its difficult to hit C as my index finger is on W for roll right. Alt allows me to use my thumb instead.
