Are tanks obsolete?
With things like manpads and UAVs slapping soviet tanks/helos around in Ukraine is this the end of the line for the tank and larger weapon platforms? Will cheap UAVs/artillery be the future and if so, will it be represented in WT?

I don't think we are seeing a full picture. More like propoganda from all sides . War itself should be obsolete . All these hatred and lies. Makes me sick. I have friends in all of these countries and it really painfull to watch somebody speculate on blood . The world is crazy place indeed.

It is pretty sad when you consider how many Russians have family in Ukraine that are being targeted and murdered by the Russian military.

Yes tanks are obsolete when an inept, old rotted to the core military like the russian federation thinks this is still WW2. NATO would make these old russian crates they call tanks obsolete very quickly.
Aha Nato, the NATO that fled afgahnistan, or the Leopard tanks that got ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in Syria? Cope harder, you arent the strongest, so you can forget about it

There are plenty of images or videos of captured Russian equipment being a sham.

Ukrainian soldiers were unloading a truck that was transporting explosives, half the explosives were just blocks of wood.

A T-80 variant that was captured had no explosives in the ERA blocks[preview.redd.it].

Some Orlan-10 Drones that have been downed have got makeshift cooling systems made of water bottles and use a $500 Canon camera[gagadget.com]

Why? Because high ranking officials steal it and sell it on the black market.

Yeah sure, of course wood. Of course drones with waterbottles instead of normal fuel tanks. You dont take anything with a grain of salt do you? And you didnt think that the russians would take the ERA off when they leave a tank? And those are spacers to keep the ERA in place. Cope harder ork, you dont know what you are talking about.

Far out, so many people in this thread are morons. The MBT came in with the centurion, and it's still here. Not the same role, but it's still here. And it ain't going anywhere.

If drones and such killing tanks makes them obsolete, what about HEAT? ATGMs? Tanks are here to stay, they are not relics. They are the only thing we have to date that matches their utility in direct fire on the battlefield. They're not going anywhere.

You mean the 3 generation old Leopard tanks?

NATO never fled afghanistan that was the US with a pullout plan, the Afghani army dropped the ball when they pulled out
A pull out that should happened sooner

Pretty much, NATO nations shoulda left altogether tbh, the Afghani Army had desertion and corruption issues before this pullout
Shoulda pulled out when the rest did
Such a cluster ♥♥♥

To be fair tho the Afghani Special Forces kept the fight going the longest so kudos to them, if only the rest where like that

they could've easily won against the taliban in conventional warfare too, too bad most of them were cowards high during their service

So long as there are men, there will be war.

I finished reading "The American War in Afghanistan: A History" by Carter Malkasian last weekend. One of the observations in the book that struck me was that the Taliban did have widespread rural support. And it was simply difficult to overcome that when the foreign forces were mostly seen as occupiers and invaders and also enemies of Islam.

yep, to add to that the Afghan army was just seen as an accompanying puppy for NATO forces, sad that they didn't even bother attempting to fight

Like you said, they didn't fight, many of them deserted, others were just "ghost soldiers", as they were nonexistent folks in the record books so that the leaders can collect salaries from the Americans!

absolutely shameful, i feel bad for the afghani people but at the same time they kinda brought it onto themselves by refusing to actually do anything

TOWS and AT weapons are great in a defensive role in urban and terrain with a lot of cover. good luck with that in the vast open fields of Eastern Ukraine where Ukraine has also placed what tanks it has. In the next few weeks expect the current double envelopment to end the war.
