SP is earned for basically scoring. Hitting enemies, getting assists, capturing points, spotting enemies, getting kills, surviving being shot multiple times, et cetera.
Instead of having to do well to bring out 2 heavies in a row, you can now easily bring out 3.
The complaints about those leaving with 1 death are for different reasons to the old days. Its no longer about them not doing well enough to spawn again. It is now that they could easily spawn again and just wont.
Also due to the absolute ease of multiple respawns there are plenty of bad players(the type who don't want to learn) rushing in blindly feeding kills to the opposing team.
Anyone who has a bit of knowledge about their own tanks and enemy tanks can do well. Also pay attention to the maps. Learn what BRs you can expect fast movers on the enemy team, so you dont overextend early into their LoS. Try not to be the first leading the charge till you get decent.
If you just be patient you should be able to pick off a few that are fighting your allies if you stay close enough to support them. There should be plenty on your team taking stupid risks and you can capitalise of killing their killers.
Your lineup can be anything, but a varied lineup is best. I usually take 4 tanks 3 air. You generally wont be able to take out all 3 air but it allows me options.
Usually good to start out with a heavy, 2 mediums and an AA. If you are good with TDs feel free to bring one, but the average player i see with a TD doesnt do too well. Other then those that have a turret.
But at certain BRs, your choices can be pretty limited.
Try to have a lineup that is all around the same BR. There are a few lower BR vehicles that can punch above their weight, but generally unless you know which they are its best not to try much lower tanks.
If you give an example BR/nation im sure many could give you actual suggestions of tanks.
So lets take 6.7 Germany. They have like 10 tanks and many planes. You can take tanks and planes into a match together in Ground RB.
So you would want to have a spot for a plane and the rest for tanks! You dont have to have a plane but its a different experience to bomb a player :D
For me, my first slot is my bomber. Then a heavy tank or my main tank. The ret just goes on.
To avoid constantly switching crew slots for vehicles (which can be costly), getting confused where something will go, etc., I recommend (using a piece of paper or a spreadsheet) making a map where each tank will go to your crew slots. It is one of the most useful things that nobody seems to know about tbh.
Some of mine are still on paper, I did a couple on spreadsheets. I do have plane lineups shown as well, to also not mix vehicles in crew slots I might not want them for, but mainly because I play air SB and it is important to have good lineups.
I have the full 10 crew slots for a few nations, or at least ~8 crew slots for every nation. Do the number of crew slots you want to do obviously.
Examples:
~Rank 4-5 German Luftwaffe

Vehicles of different strengths is more required in Air Simulator Battles btw than tank battles, due to spawn timers and SP costs, etc.
~Rank 2-4 US Army

Clear lineups are set up to give the best optimum lineup for the BR. In most cases, the order allows for the highest BR vehicles to be selected if possible, for example, a 6.0 lineup would have 2 6.0 tanks, 2 more 5.7s after that, and a 5.3 and 2 5.0s after that, giving a mostly optimal lineup without rearranging vehicles. There is also diversity, for both different situations, as well as, for different spawncosts. 3 Medium tanks, 1 heavy tank, 1 TD, 1 light tank, and 1 SPAA, each with different spawncosts, as the medium tanks I enjoy the most on average, but they're fairly high and may be put in a situation where they may be too expensive, the heavy tank being one of the 6.0s here, but with highest spawncost (of tanks), a TD with is strong gunned, yet lower SP than both meds and heavies (for some reason, tbh I think the SPG SP cost and Med. Tank cost should be switched), the cheapest tank with a full caliber gun, the light tank, and of course the dirt cheap SPAA.
I didn't finish listing the planes, but the last ~3 slots would be fighter, attacker, bomber, for the fighter to engage enemy aircraft and possibly some light attack runs, attacker for more advanced ground attack while still being a smaller target and accurate, while the bombers for when you want to do some damage (usually prefer light bombers and stuff though). They are together, to show as an example to keep vehicles in similar slots to their roll, meaning I never have to worry about their tank crew points ever, unless they say were to add more crew slots. The same applies to tanks as well, for example, the 5th slot over has no medium or light tanks for example. So, you can focus your crew skills on stuff that is important, while stuff like artillery strike skills would be useless.
As well for when planning out top tier, don't just consider what they have now, but consider what they could have in the future as well. If you asked me where I would put all my MiG-17s, MiG-19s, MiG-21s, MiG-23s, MiG-27s, SU-7s, SU-9s, SU-11s, Tu-16s, Tu-95s, etc., I already know exactly where they would go. Keep top tier in mind, if you do this and make a plan, that new tanks are always being added.
Edit: also, if you are this type of person, you can keep historical accuracy in mind as well for this. I like to also set up my maps where I could have the best lineups for X br, or, I could have a historically accurate late 1944 lineup for events and stuff. I have my 6.3 Russian lineup set up all nice for example, or, if I wish, I can always change it to a nice 1945 battle of berlin lineup if I need, as I accomodated that: remove the T-44s, have the T-34-85s or even a T-34-76 backup, IS-2 options, ISU series and SU-100, light AA trucks, historical aircraft for CAS, etc. So keep that in mind if you're historically minded as well, and want to duel this with events.
But a few BRs slower is my Ferdinand which at last i saw was about 18000 to repair.
you can still use those types of vehicles and make a profit, but if you are having a bad game/spawn camped and that is your last vehicle you can choose, then it may be better to just leave the game then lose that type of silver.
T-44 122, asu-85(apcbc) Pe-8 ;).
My line up for losing money is,
T-80b, object 906,zsu-23-4,mi-24-p, Pe-8.
I onle play urss favorite nation, i wait the reduce of crew experience for maybe begin a new nation.
