Just trying to play Aviation with a friend... "This event for Squadrons' only"

Like the title says. I have a buddy in my squad that I want to play some Aviation matches with, but the game keeps giving me this (amusingly grammatically incorrect) error. What am I doing wrong? Can I not play standard Aviation matches with a friend?

The only option I'm seeing on the mode select drop-down is "Air Battles," no arcade/realistic distinction

Squadron battles are different from just squadding up with your friend. You create a squad with your friend, and just join standard random battles, and it’ll put you on the same team, same match.

But I'm not trying to join a squadron battle. I'm trying to join random battles and it's giving me this message.

A screenshot might be helpful. For me I only get this message if I try to join squadronbattles.

Log-out and Log-In, the game sometimes fails to load the battle options...
