What is Gaijn.Net?
I've heard it's spyware that installs with this game that can only be removed via a registry edit.

If this is true, Steam needs to do something about that.

HOW TO REMOVE GAIJIN AGENT.

The agent is NOT malware as some very uninformed individuals here claim with absolutely no evidence to support their case. It is nothing but disinformation. The agent acts very much like a number of software update programs. Even your Operating System and Anti Virus software does this.

To Remove it.

For Windows 7:
Open a command line (press Win+R or click on the start button and use the seach line)
Enter "msconfig.exe" into the text box.
In the System Configuration tool - go to the startup tab and disable / uncheck the gaijin.net agent.

on Win8 / 10:
Open the Task Manager, Select the startup tab and disable the gaijin.net agent.
Shut down the gaijin.net agent in the system tray (right click to get the Exit option).

if you want to completely remove the agent you need to go to the following folder and delete it:
c:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Gaijin\

The AppData folder can be hidden in some installations.

https://support.gaijin.net/hc/en-us/articles/115001876905-Gaijin-Agent

However, if you remove it. Do not then moan and complain about long downloads etc when a major update of the game is released. This is one of the things the Agent minimizes!

Check the top pinned post in "Technical problems and advice" on Steam forums for this game, the first comment explains everything

Gaijin.Net is the overarching website that warthunder is coordinated through. It is not spyware or ransomware. It is perfectly safe. Some people have just never seen an independant game that has a steam shortcut addon. (Let's just say gaijin.net is like steam for WT)

Its pretty much the auto updater. People just blew it out of proportion and now people who dont research it think its spyware. If it truly was this game would have been off steam long ago. Many f2p games and even p2p games use auto updaters. Its completly safe.

So whats the bit about it not un-installing and needing a registry edit to remove?

It downloads to your system without being asked, runs and downloads in the background without being asked. Not spyware per se, but it wasn't exactly liked by the community having a program auto run in the background without asking permission first, especially as it is (or was) peer 2 peer, like a torrent program.

Safe just badly done with no real option to not have it on your PC without going to annoying steps.
A lot of the same traits as malware with its inability to easy remove, keeps installing itself, option to disable through warthunder launcher works for some, others it does nothing and updater still enables.

There isnt really a need for it, but you have no choice really.

I dont like it, turning it off has never worked for me, its just back on every time i restart my pc. If i forget to manually close it i just end up with a random lag spike to find out that GJ agent is on and downloading in the background while i play other games.
No clean easy way to not have it so had to use a different workaround to stop it being on my PC as that was the only choice for me to actually turn it off(as mentioned checkbox did absolutely nothing).

Because those are utter garbage. If you use McAffee or Norton you're dumb as a bag of friggin rocks.

Windows Defender kicks ass on those and isn't obtrusive. What, you still got an AOL account? :D Kidding.

No really. AV programs like those are for idiots. Microsoft doesnt want their reputation damaged that's why Defender is literally the only AV you need.

they have removed support for Win 7 and will soon forcibly upgrade all win 7 users to win 10...
it feels like they think they've got us wrapped so tightly around their thumb that we can't escape. So that whatever they do we will continue to buy. AND IT'S WORKED....

Because War Thunder isn't the only game its used for. It's also used in "Star Conflict" (their space-fighter game) and Crossout (Mad Max simulator 2018), possibly they will use it for their upcoming FPS title Enlisted. If uninstalling one game removed it, then it would break all the others, hence why you need to remove it manually.
