Elephant
Any chance we will get the Elephant in-game?

I always thought the Elephant and Ferdinand were the same but the Elephant is actually a better Ferdinand.

In late 43 all surviving Ferdiandns were modified into Elephants.

Elephants had ball mounted mg in the hull, thicker frontal armor, a better comanders copola, Zimmerit paste, and widened tracks.

We really don't need the Elephant but I thought it be cool to see it in-game as another version of the Ferdinand

"The Elefant (German for "elephant") was a heavy tank destroyer used by German Wehrmacht Panzerjäger during World War II. It was built in small numbers in 1943 under the name Ferdinand"

They ARE the same, the hull MG was added after infantry rushed them.

The major difference is the addition of a cupola for the commander and a machine gun for the radio operator. This would in fact add potential weak spots to the tank since you don't need to handle infantry in this game. I'm not sure if the other upgrades would justify this.

They are the same visually mostly. The Elefant was a modified Ferdinand. The Elefant had thicker frontal armor and other minor changes.

Visually they would look nearly identical.

No, no it didn't, it was called "Ferdinand" while being developed and initially built before they changed the name to "Elefant", they're the same tank.

Edit: I stand corrected, sorry, they were the same vehicles but the designation change by Hitler was only after the upgrades were installed

Germany is a country of literature, so we give our fighting vehicles actual names and not just numbers and letters. :steamhappy:

A few changes that happened in a bit of a weird order. The original VK4501(P) obviously had the MG on the 100mm hull. But, they decided to up the armor by adding the extra 100mm plates, putting it to 200mm, but having been done quickly to have them at Kursk, they removed the hull MG and covered it up, making the Ferdinand. After criticism and complaints came in, they cut a port in the armor and re-fitted the hull MG.

All you would get from having the Elefant is an MG with a very small area of fire (but still would help a bit) and a small copula on top. The extra 100mm plates were bolted onto the Ferdinand as they intended to (and initally did) use them as heavy assault guns. Similar to a StuG, but with a bigger gun, and able to resist most enemy AT fire from the front to break through heavily defended Soviet lines.
