With the current in-game economy, at least in Air RB it can be quite problematic to get a net positive on later rank 3 and up, if you're not running a premium account, given you need 3-4 kills (which is 25% of the enemy team usually) on a lost match to be in the clear.
What's you goal exactly? If the priority is making SL, the best solution is playing a different mode.
One thing to be aware of are the medals you earn on the side of the score screen. For air AB, some of the easier ones to earn are the ones for getting the most AI ground target kills, especially the Rogue Wave one for killing ships since there’s only a few per map. If there’s 9 PT boats, killing just 5 guarantees you that award and most of the higher tier medals like that can earn you a decent chunk of SL. My personal favorite to earn is mission maker, earned by getting both the first and last kill of the game. With a booster active, the last game I earned that in was worth 13.5k alone.
Point is, if you look at those medals and see the ones that are either easy to earn many of or are worth a ton of SL, trying to get those each match can help you earn more SL per match.
A lot has to do with the tier I play, but I’m not sure if or when I’ve ever left a match with a net negative SL. Probably has to do with rarely playing top tier. I just don’t like the gameplay once you have things like choppers and ATGMs and all that. War Thunder is, was and always will remain a WWII game in my eyes.
The short version, play rank 3 or lower.
But also it sounds like you may have no idea whatsoever what you're doing making a lineup. The short form:
-Rank is irrelevant (except for clearing special tasks).
-BR is everything.
-BR should be about the same for all your vehicles, since matchmaking is based on the highest.
-In air arcade battles only, it can be good to have one aircraft that is two BR steps (a step is 1/3 BR) ahead of the rest, and optionally one aircraft that is on the step between the high plane and the rest. Your matchmaking rank in that case will be one step below your highest instead of equal to your highest.
Depends on the vehicle. At rank 2 I don't think it should be too expensive, but if it's a great performing plane, then probably yeah it's expensive. Especially if you don't have premium
I'm really not sure what vehicles you're using, but at 3.3, it shouldn't be too difficult to break even with a few assists or a kill. What vehicle are you specifically using in arcade?
Note that you should not be shooting at the lead indicator. Shoot just ahead of it. It tells you where to shoot based on no movement whatsoever. Since your plane and the enemy plane are both moving, you need to adjust slightly for direction and speed. Should help if you're not getting many hits.

I had 1 kill 2 assists 2 ground targets destroyed
