You don't have to get the entire year long subscription. Just get a couple of weeks when you go to research it, and it will be alright. Or, you can get a vehicle pack and it comes with ge + Premium so you can get more. What I would suggest.
What nation are you grinding, and what br/rank are you at? Maybe we could also give some advice for those planes.
But with the RP gain nerfs these days, it will take a lot longer to get to jets without a premium aircraft and/or account.
Likewise you can also look at smaller trees. China, Sweden, and Italy are all fairly reasonable to get through. Just 2 of those 3 are just a little overinflated in BR or Repair costs (or worse yet, both) due to their statistics likely not taking player skill into account (which is really hard to do properly IMO). Then you need to consider one of these does not have an amazing top tier jet (yet), nor all thay big of a jet tree to start with.
Get a good premium plane and fly SB for some hours and you get a ♥♥♥♥ ton of RP..
Thats how i got down to Viggen..fast..
Surely though, skill is an entry requirement to go that route? My goal when I started playing last year was to fly some jets. It's not much of a priority anymore, and I'm almost there, but it's taken an obscene amount of time.
I've been working at Realistic for a couple months or so now, and I still have plenty of games where I die before I even cover repair costs. For the time and skill I have available, I wonder if Arcade might be more lucrative. I've wanted to check out SB for a while, but I'm worried it's just gonna lead to more of my play sessions ending without me having made any progress.
Also, I have only the bare minimum in controls beyond the M&KB, which I imagine puts me at a disadvantage.
You can unlock jets perfectly fine in a couple of weeks playing tech tree planes without premium in Air RB, but SL is an entirely different matter.
Given without premium the later prop planes frequently require a 4:1 K/D ratio just to break even without taking victory bonus into account, or in other words require you to kill one third of the enemy team in a normal match all by yourself... and that is just the planes with a "normal" repair cost... you get the idea.
Only realistic way without premium for the average player is playing rank II until you are absolutely sick of it, and then play some more, and some more, and yet more. Plan for a year or so until you have the first jet and enough SL to not go broke immediately.
And then realize that unlike Ground where the good gameplay is at the highest tiers, gameplay after rank III in Air does take a nosedive it never recovers from anyway.
Personally, I'd suggest to play early WW2 props and be happy with it, the rest isn't worth the time. At least you don't have to suffer through the bad parts like you have to with Ground just to get to the fun gameplay.
