Side ERA, not front ERA, and I don't remember if its the turms or the other top tier T72 but one of them has stronger optics in the drivers hatch which will randomly stop 350mm pen and lower rounds like those on the XM-1 so be careful with a hatch shot.
As for OP, do what fairy said if you fight it head on (though again I think the turms might be able to stop rounds to the driver hatch, so be cautious) but if its side on then don't use your heat rounds, use APFSDS and try to aim a little lower, like with the lower plate you are trying to hit the ammo which on on the floor of the tank so try to fire as low as reasonably possible so you can ammo rack it AND keep in mind that 500ish meters plus ERA, plus track, plus side armor=non-penetration, if you aim too high you will hit the track and it will eat the APFSDS round (this extends to many of the tanks in game with ERA packages not just the turms). Just a little bit of practice and you will be able to avoid the non-pen and get the ammo rack from the front and side.
The driver hatch is a good weak spot but as pointed out it also likes to eat everything. Really awesome weak spot
If you shoot at the side I would recommend either the back turret (turret has lower armor at the backside) or right behind where the Era packs stop. That's usually a good point to get the kill.
If the Turms player pushes only focus on the breach or the barrel. It cannot really drive reverse and then he will die.
The Xm1 has in my opinion a bad round but is really agile and has a superb gun depression. I would advise to always shoot the barrel because the Turms and BVM are the definition of "get gaijind" and either you will not pen, like you did, or he will take no damage and kill you.
If you can sideshoot him always go for the back side of the turret, much more reliable than the hull.
You can also try to shoot the track around the corner and then shoot the LFP for the fuel.
Sometimes the fuel will explode and will put you to no risk getting shot at.
