You can play without Premium, but be prepared to invest some serious time.
So if you like pain or give money to strangers, this is the game for you :)
If you´d like some advice, help or simply some people to play with hit me up!
Yes, after tier 1 its grind grind grind. And you'll only get ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tanks with tiers so you die more often hence even more grind.
If you want to buy all tanks you'd be spending a few thousand dollars on a single nation.
Rank 4-6, it’s hard, repair costs makes it even harder, since in WoT repair costs only hurt tier 7+, while in WT it’s only halfway though, rank 4+.
But ultimatly, when it comes to research itself, no, people hate on it, but it is not as hard as World of Tanks at all. Only Rank VI itself it gets extreme, and even then researching 1 Rank VI is way easier than researching 1 Tier VIII in WoT.
"And getting worse every year", like the HUGE rp reductions that just hit tier 4-6 or so? Jets going from 380K RP to 90K?
Premium can be had for $30/year, and some of the best "farming" vehicles can be had for 3,000 GE which is like another $15/ea.
Not sure what $45 buys in WOT (And frankly I don't care...), but with very little skill involved, a year of premium and a Ju-288C bomber will set you up pretty good to blaze your way through the german airforce.
Once you get past tier 3, the grind gets larger, but not exponentially so. The RP cost doesnt jump from 50krp to 100k rp, instead its more like 50k -> 60k -> 75k -> 90k -> ect ect.
The worst part of the grind is just researching parts and fire extinguishers for your tank. Beyond that, the grind is smooth.
Quick note, the research for the next tank and the research for the tank youre playing are seperate unlike in WOT. You earn both research points at the same time.
There is no free xp like in WOT, which is a shame, and the convertible rp in WT has a conversion rate that is terrible so dont bother unless you like being a cash pinata.
Kinda depends on what you want out of the game though. Like just want to play WW2 tanks then the game is fun and not too grindy. But want to for whatever reason unlock every single plane and tank in the game because you want to "beat" the game, then yeah it's going to be a huge painful grind.
Not to mention once you get to the top you'll find yourself enjoying lower tiers plenty
All answers point to YES. Shamefully, it wasnt always this way. Back in the day I grinded all the way to 5.7 in tanks and planes without premium but then I hit a wall.
Its really not that much money to get a years worth of premium time and the 180 days for 20$ comes every year too so just stock up when there is a sale to keep it going to the next sale.
Beyond that in the current year of our eternal suffering 2019 there are MANY vehicles in the game that you simply will never be able to play without premium time, the repair costs prohibitive to all except the richest of us who have many premium vehicles to recoup losses
Ask me how much my heavy bomber costs. Then ask an american player how they feel about the b-29 *cringe*
But at least in this game we dont have premium gold ammo that lets you pay to win. (dont look at our pay to win premium vehicles though they are questionable)
The current status of how much RP tiers 3-5(late) and even some of 6 cost are a lot better than what they were. It's late, I can't be bothered to look up how much the old RP values were, but when we have vehicles that cost 380K RP now only costing 90K RP, that isn't exactly insignificant.
When you break down what premium costs for its entertainment value, it's almost negligible. About $0.10/day, or $0.75/week. If you play even an hour a week, you're paying less than a dollar an hour for increased entertainment value and faster progression. Where I live this is like two hours of labor at minimum wage for a year of premium.
See above comment about premium cost and premium vehicle cost... For what it is, the prices at 50% off are quite reasonable when you look at return on investment.
