You mean even before they enable proper foliage collision? Like planes can still fly through trees just fine, but do collision damage to vehicles?
That wouldn't make sense, historically the planes were laden with fuel and explosives for that purpose, and didn't carry a regular payload.
They also had a tendency to explode when hit with anything, or even just because it was a monday.

As for American kamikaze tactics at Midway, there is a difference between heading off with the intention to suicide attack, and the act of going "Well I may be a dead man but you're coming with me!". Just saying.

Yes, they did. It use to be a thing and it was awful. Eventually it was removed.
HMS Sussex, hit by a Mitsubishi Ki-51 light bomber. Being a kamikaze pilot isn't always effective.
