Considering it's a Long Sniper Tank and you're supposed to Angle the Tank Flat Armor unlike the Ho-Ri which needs to be Elevated due to Slope Armor.
It's also used as a Flanker and if you failed to play the Ferdi then you failed to play any Tank Destroyer of the Previous Tier/BR of German and like all the German Tanks the Stock Ammo is always used.
Learn to play Smart with the TD and learn the Weak point of the Enemy Ranks example Turret Ring, Sides, Lower Front Plate, between the Tracks & Plate of the Front Tank.
It's only Slow if it's Stock and the reason of high Repair is due to High Skill Players > Low Skill players causing the Fee to go up. It's a High Risk/Reward.
Repair costs are ridiculous obviously, but that's usually par for the course with Gaijin tbh.
In uptiers, you'll have meaner guns such as 105mms and British 84mms to contend with, but your biggest strength will be finding a good spot to take out people.
The repair cost is ridiculous still, I have no idea why is it this expensive.
On this kind of BR, every single light tank and maybe even TD has either HEATFS, HEAT or APDS and because of this stupid matchmaking system that's currently in the game, 8 games out of 10 I get uptiered so I have no chance to survive against those "almost modern" tanks even if they don't have this kind of ammo.
Also it has ammo stored basically everywhere in the turret so if you get shot in the turret and they will penetrate the armor (not that hard to achieve), there is almost 100% chance that your ammunition will explode.
I don't just pick one tank and play it regardless of the map and br.
If you only get a few maps that you like with a br that you not bottom in then i would use the ferdi.
if it was a map I hate and i was bottom, with that repair cost i would not use it, i would use one of the other cheaper vehicles in my line up.
This is average german ammo.
