Gaijin banning sound mods in Ground RB/SB
https://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/516297-preliminary-changelog-for-ixwa-strike-major-update/

So I was looking through the dev server patch notes and found this little guy hiding at the bottom:

"A mechanism for limiting the use of custom sound modifications has been implemented. At the moment, when trying to start tank simulator or tank realistic battles by using custom sound mods you will see a dialog box with the message: “Sound mods are prohibited in the selected game mode. To turn off mods you need to restart the game. Restart the game?”

I really hope this doesn't make it to the live build...

So sounds mods are not allowed in RB/SB but ULQ graphics is? wth.

Excellent. No mods of any kind should be allowed in competitive games.

I mean as long as they don't give you an advantage I don't mind people using mods. It's when they give you something like glowing enemy tanks or reduced personal hitboxes making you more difficult to hit etc, that's when they should be banned.

But if universal banning of all mods is the best way forward then I'm not bothered, I don't use mods anyway.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

It's a Sound Mod. NOT a Cheat Mod.

If its giving the player using it advantage its cheat isnt it? like maybe modifying other tank engine/gun to be super loud so its easier for you to spot for example. Maybe this is why gaijin ban these?

Its a bit of a shame for those that use them. Adjusting engine volumes is built into the game anyway.

Yes but having a mod which changes engine sounds to be more directional or even more recognisable so that you can identify tanks that you shouldn't engage with, is advantageous.

That's completely hypothetical by the way, I don't know what mods are available for WT.

think about what you can use a sound mod to do if you could edit it the way you want it.

If I play german, i set all the gun shots for usa to the noise of a DUCK,
everytime I hear a duck, I know to look in the direction of the duck.

now this is taken to the extreme but this sort of thing happens in other games.

as said, you can increase engine noise,
BUT why not REALLY increase everyone else's engine noise, sure makes spotting easy.

As a mod i don't like once said, you have no idea what is in the sound mod you download.
you really don't.

Personally i think there could be something else going on we know nothing of.

but it is up to you,
take a risk with your account

good spot, i really should read those things and not just wait till they drop.

People would make packs of mods where each nation would have basically no sound while every other nation would have their sounds boosted and more identifiable (then switch out the pack to another one when they wanted to use another nation). Coupled with ULQ (which they will never remove because Russian market) it was boarderline wallhacks. This is why it was removed, sure the actual good mods that added to the game and didn't outright give you an advantage got caught in the crossfire, Gaijin said they're working on a system to whitelist sound mods so you could use those in RB/SB it's just taking them some extra time and didn't make it for the update.

why?

Sound mods have always been grey/banned. I was banned 3 years ago for using a sound mod, and had to fight for over a year to get my account back. This is, of course, despite Gaijin mods on places like reddit specifically saying they are ok.

You weren't banned just for using a sound mod, it was actually directly stated in their terms of use that sound mods were allowed. So if you were banned for 'illegal modifications', you had more than just a "sound mod" on your system.

then, if that was the case, why was I unbanned?
