Generally speaking Typhoons are faster and better armed (the first ones), they have worse turning, but have better energy retention than Spits, hence they are very suited for fast B'n'Zooming at medium/low altitudes.
The Spitfires are the epitome of turnfighters, and are also slightly superior in climbrate and altitude fighting, but they are pretty bad at energy retention, so they are mediocre B'n'Zoomers and at fighting in the vertical.
i have some hours into the game but CAS is a new term, mind explaining it to a "slightly slow one"? :p
I believe it's Close Air Support. That is, shooting ground targets with guns rather than bombs.
Pretty much attacking ground targets, wether with guns, rockets, and/or bombs.
Spits are turnfighters with great climb, bad energy retention.
Tiffies are low alt, rather heavy fighters, good armament and can take a punch.
Can be fast (but accelerate slow).
Good for CAS, and some boom & zooming at lower alt, if you really know what you are doing (that is keep it fast or at least at high energy, and avoid turning).
Then my advice is to research both the first Spitfire and the first Typhoon. They are both very good and you won't be long to unlock them. After trying them both you'll see which one fits more your play style and so you'll decide what line to continue to research.
