It`s just one of those unfortunate tanks that murders in downtier and gets completely annihilated in uptier where armor doesnt mean anything and your long reload will get you killed.
My thoughts exactly, agree completely.
It's something that I would keep in my lineup, and if I noticed the MM was favorable, to use it/upgrade it in those matches, and if it was a big uptier, I would simply push it aside and use other vehicles.
Other than the above, it also faces tanks that have rounds that can punch through its armor, so no matter what you do and how you angle it, people can pretty much one-shot you from the front.
So the only real suggestion I can give you about the IS-3 (and IS-4M variant, for that matter) is simply to not use it. The higher you go in tiers, the focus shifts more towards speed (both in agility and reload). Unfortunately the Russians don't always shine in that department at high tiers.
Who shines at uptiers? last time i played this game it was the A1 abrams. Has that changed?
Meta is all about kittycats now.
You didn't ask me, but if you want my two cents:
It's not that any vehicle particularly 'shines' when they face BR's higher than their own- after all, the BR system is supposed to increase as the vehicles capabilities/effectiveness increases.
That being said, there are some vehicles that can cope with an uptier better than others. In my experience, most of these vehicles that can better-cope have a decent gun and VERY good mobility, usually with little armor (Anything at their BR would pen them anyways, the idea that someone is going to be shooting at them with an extra 100+mm of penetration really doesn't change anything). Examples of this include things like the M22, RBT-5, Hellcats (Sorta), M56, and I am sure a dozen more that their names don't currently come to mind.
The Russians, in my experience, always tend to suffer a lot when uptiered, because at higher tiers they tend to face vehicles which are considerably faster, have better turret traverse, better rounds and better reload rates and most of them tend to have stabilizers.
So yeah, the IS series, aren't really adaptable, since they can be one-shot frontally from practically any of the vehicles that they face (unless the IS-3 gets severely down-tiered)
But other than that learn about how to tell if you are getting a up-tier or down-tier by your spawn cost and simply don't take it out in up-tier like I do with my jumbo's if I'm up-tier I use my sherman's and if down-tier or a 5.3 game I use my Jumbo's
Im playing AB only right now, more fun and i get 2k RP for 8 min game. I can also see when im uptier'd
And I can't get into AB I can't seem to make silver in it at all I might be lucky to get 10k a match when in RB I make around 30k on average and up to 70k in good matches with no boosters
If your looking for an actual assault tank the IS-4M is what you're looking for, still don't rely on that one's armor all the time though.
