Reduce the .50 crit chance by half compared to 20mm and .50 still comes out ahead statistically.
The 50s come in large numbers with a high RoF. More bullets means more likely to hit important bits. Downside being that as the armor and durability goes up, the MG become less and less effective.
However, cannons produce better glancing shot kills as they only need a couple hits to destroy their target if they hit something critical vs. .50 cals where only a couple of rounds won't do much damage, if at all. This is primarily why the shift from heavy caliber bullets shifted to cannon rounds after Korea as F-86s were having trouble bringing down Migs without prolonged bursts of fire, which as aircraft get faster and more nimble, becomes incredibly difficult to achieve.
