Taking long routes *around the map* often does not work for me because someone will be surely autistic enough to fly that 20km detour just to kill you. And since bombers are slow they mostly catch up.... so it feels like wasted time for me. But hey, maybe you have more luck
with heavy bombers your only strategy is based on luck and your gunner skills, take a long route, enough long to not get spotted by enemy aircrafts immediately
with bombers at jet br, on some you have to apply the first strategy i said (Il-28 as example)
and on others you have to apply the second strategy i said, but you have to take a route even longer, i suggest to stay away at least 20km from the center of the battlefield
option 2: convince someone in a fighter to escort you. (good luck)
The hardest part is getting the lead right when aiming. Not all bombers are lucky to have good gunner position or guns. Italian planes are an example of poorer guns on a bomber for defense.
General rule of thumb for WT. Being a comrade will never hurt you, unless you are Polish. People forget that the "Great Patriotic War" started with the USSR ALLIED with Nazi Germany to divide up poor Poland between them. Then they promptly decided to invade Finland because "LOL why not" and lost so many men to a handful of barely equipped snowmen that the Germans were like "Hey we can take these guys too if the little Finns can."
But to OP's question: height and angle of attack. Don't just fly straight in from the spawn. Try and see where the fighters are (arcade), or were they might be (realistic). Always be aware of your surroundings and DON'T get target fixation. Sometimes it's better to move slower and take your time getting to a place to bomb. You might not do as much damage and/or get impatient, but you won't be dead :)
RB: cloud, stay out of LoS and try and minimise time in view. Cling to the map edges and never go down the middle.
Gunners are mostly last resort.
I suppose another is try and form a killbox with another player if that's the correct term. stay in a rough formation and use your combined firepower to ward off players.
Ultimately: you will die often. Bombers aren't really worth it anymore, beyond the risk-reward of SL grinding and events.
Scream witness me and attack the D point on your road to valhalla!
