is it just bad? gun pen is horrible. b1 bis in particular is not very good, enemies aim for the flat part of the armor and you end up dying. angling doesn't help at all

The B1 bis and B1 Ter are some of the best tanks at that BR. Most things will have a hard time penning you. Just don't play like you're invincible and you'll do very well.

the b1 bis can be immune to the enemy guns if you play correctly and dont push your turret has no armor and gets penned easy angling works well but at close range enemies can spot and shoot flat bits in the angling making it semi useless but 37mm and low pen 75 wont be able to pen it with easy

yes, low french is very bad, lots used to think low jpn was bad then they released the french.

NOW at around 3.3 the french change and become very good.

push through the low ones, it is worth it.

B1 can definitely wipe half of the enemy team, but that's more of a full-downtier situation; you probably shouldn't bother using it if fully uptiered. Also, be aware that the minority who are actually decent players will try hard to focus you down in order to keep their less competent teammates from dying in droves.

Funny thing is, I notice if you become somewhat competent with early French equipment, you almost feel God tier when you get into another tree.

B1 bis is a great tank if the matchup and map favors it. French low tier is actually pretty enjoyable after the addition of lend lease vehicles. Once you get the M3 Stuart and Crusader, you'll start having fun with the French tree. M3 Stuart in particular is a monster once you get the hang of it, you can go on insane killstreaks with it if the enemy team are a bunch of derps.

maybe, i hated it, i hate t1 and t2 in any nation so I can't argue with you on that.

I stuck my t1 and t2 into AB, capped and assisted till I was at 3.3 amx13 FL11,
real good vehicle that.

low shermans are ok but I warbonds so apart from the first task nothing counts with them.

at br 3.3 I found the french very good, bit like the brits with their pen what they see guns,
spoiled a little recently by the EBR which made people look at them,
so a few of the low french got a br increase.......i hate the EBR for that but they did need the increase really.

love the m4a4 sa50, very good gun, good gun depression, fits my play style well.

Pallier's D.510 can totally dominate a 4.0 AB match. It's kind of preposterous.

None of the rank I tanks in the French ground tree are worth playing at all except for the Lorraine 37L. The only true loser in rank II is the SAu 40, and in rank III things get really good.

tier I french tanks can work as in they have a few cards to play with, but yes it is definitely sub-par in practice.

Unless something really changed (it has been quite a few months), how about the AMR.35 ZT3 and the D2? While they suffer the typical T1 French issue of low crew count and rather light armor, I found they have their own ways of shining.

Pre war french tanks have been argued to be much better than their German equivalents. The doctrine of the whole French army was their main problem. The Chieftan has an excellent video on them.

2.7 RB is decent. Just opened up my 3.3 lineup which seems fine. Pair it with the P-40 Lafayette and it's a good time.

"much better" when you take real life context into consideration.
here however the differences are quite drastic. calling them sub-par in war thunder is not non-sensical.
