You only need a joystick in SB really, in AB it's quite better to use mouse/kb, and for RB I wouldn't know really but mouse/kb works.

Joystick works alright for RB, however the mouse aim mode is better and you will find yourself at a disadvantage. The joystick however is very good for SB.

I apologise however I can't really help with specific joysticks as I personally don't use them, although I know and am friends with quite a few who do. Sorry I can't be of more help.
as long as your joystick works inside your operating system (installed and working drivers), you will be able to map functions to it in-game.
War Thunder feels refreshingly oldschool in that it gives you a plethora of remapping-options and won't force useless presets on you. Only downide is it won't hold your hand and require you to put a little work into figuring out what you want your controls to be.

In general though, I believe joystick-use is only recommendable for sim-air combat. rb and ab flight-models are simply taylored towards mouse-aim and gamepad play, making too many compromises in order for stick-wielders to have a fair fight.

I can attest to Joysticks should be used for Sim Battles. If you use them in Realistic Battles, you're putting yourself at a disadvantage against M&K users whom have a finer tuned control ability. I used to fly with a buddy that would use Joystick in RB and while he enjoyed it, he always stated that M&K users could aim better and manuver just a little better than he was able to.
