HESH is only similar to HE in that it doesn't care about armor slope, penetration and post-penetration are different. Generally speaking this ammo is unreliable or at the very list highly situational.
No. HEATFS will detonate even on chain fences, bushes, anything.
Then I guess APHE is still needed for some matches...
I am at br 7 for America, Germany, USSR and Britain. Start to get used to using all different types of shells.
One trick I use is to fire a few MG rounds to kill any fences/bushes, then immediately fire HEATFS afterwards
In my experience:
- For Britain you can get away with using only APDS until you get to APFSDS. Sometimes HESH can be useful as well, mostly against Soviet tanks and large soft targets.
- For USSR you can safely avoid HEATFS on everything except for light vehicles with smaller guns (BTR-1, PT-76, etc.).
- For USA and Germany you'll pretty much have to use HEATFS until you get to APFSDS. You can either use it exclusively and modify your tactics accordingly (because you can't shoot through anything) or take a couple of weaker rounds to shoot through stuff. Both options have some good and bad side effects.
That should be enough to play around at High Tier before you get shot back.
