though this is the size of the 'full client' (including hd textures, sounds etc).

if disk space is scarce on your system or your download bandwidth is limited you may as well install the 'standard' (or minimal) client which will only take about 4,5gb.

however this can't be done via Steam since Steam is always downloading / installing the full client... to get the minimal client you need to download the installer from the wartunder.com website (and upon starting the launcher you need to make sure the 'full client' tickbox on the launcher isn't ticked)
