do not play simulator planes with mouse and keyboard

It will take a lot of learning to get into air simulation mode. This game is difficult to start playing as it is and sim is particularly brutal on newbies.

As for takeoff, airplanes with one propeller continuously turn while on the ground because of propeller's torque. You need to compensate for that either with mouse or whatever buttons turning is bound to (probably Q / E by default for left / right). You'll also have to continuously compensate for that while in the air, but it's much easier there.

I won't discourage you from trying, but as you can imagine, takeoff is just the top of the iceberg here. There will be lots of other difficulties if you're set on doing simulation mode, and other modes don't prepare you for them at all. Feel free to try arcade or realistic should you decide that sim is not for you after all.

If you really want to enjoy planes in sim, I'd recommend a (good) joystick.

In AB & RB mouse & keyboard are king, but not in sim.

Suddenly buying a joystick out of the blue is not a good idea. If you've never held it before in your life, it won't be more effective or more easy to use the first time you try it. It won't be easier to learn with it either, it will only add to the discomfort.

It also won't be enough on its own (because there aren't enough buttons on it and because it sucks for looking around), so he'll need a bunch of additional systems that will be completely useless outside of sim battles. That's way too much commitment and investment for a new player.

Trying to learn sim flying with a mouse is a lesson in futility.

Trying to learn sim flying with a joystick WILL be easier.

Oh really? Have you tried learning both from scratch in War Thunder? How many years ago did you start using a joystick? Do you even remember what it's like to start using it for the first time? Unlikely.

If you try to learn sim flying with a mouse in WT, the mouse input just simulates joystick inputs.

Of course it's easier to just use a real joystick instead.

And I began gaming on a C64, of course I remember my first (flight sim with a) joystick (Solo Flight). :-)

Thought so. So basically he asked how to take off and your answer is buy expensive equipment and at some point within next 10-40 years using it will be like second nature to you. What a great advice to someone with 5 hours in a game that doesn't require a joystick...

My advice was:
Want to play sim, use a joystick.
Want to play AB & RB, use mouse & keyboard.

Learning will take 2 months max. (for all modes & input devices).

The answer is probably P-factor. You need to use rudder on takeoff in propeller planes to counteract the P-factor of a propeller. OP, could you describe what is happening in greater detail? Are you trying to use manual engine control?

What worked for me was throttle around 30% building a bit of speed, using rudder keys for stability, to keep the plane in a somewhat straight line on the runway, and once speed picked up i successfully increased the throttle until like 70% before going full power for the take off. Try it out. Im a complete novise in sim but this (estimated the numbers )worked for me. With mouse and keyboard.

until you have a twin engine or more with counter rotating propellers you NEED to accelerate slowly to 100% engine power and use the rudder to counter the engine torque, once mid air same rule for turning or flying in a straight line, turn too hard and you flat spin to the ground, don't counter the torque and you end up constantly doing big circle or miss target due to you trajectory when firing

In sim take off with jets is pretty easy but not props. I usually play sim with keybort and maus.Truth is its real hard to compete with maus n keyboard as i always have to fight my own plane not the enemy.

1. U got enemy on ur 6 ,u pressed c + maus(free look mode),what is next?? Man ur F* ed up.w s a d is hell as F.

2. Make sure u run wt at high Fps if not. Lost sight = dad

Regardless i have destroyed tons of T54 + soviets heavy (100+ kills) with my me410 B1. CAS is doable with maus and keyboard but not dogfighting.

If u want my control setup let me know :steamhappy: ,i also configured head movement too

Sure you can go out a but a super expensive HOTAS setup for £100s but there are cheaper options out there.. You can get some decent joysticks with a built in throttle and enough buttons under £50.. you can also pick up entry HOTAS setups for under £100 and can be used in many other flight sims..

But yeah its going off topic really.. you can play realistic battles and you will need to land to reload and so on and then take off after.. playing sim with a mouse and keyboard is not the best option but check this out.

A few years old but might help..
