Horizontal traverse research will help, but it is still very slow. Best to play it as they said above.
Keep at a distance, traverse the hull if you need to make big turret turns insted (so play more like a casemate style TD), and keep a sharp ear for aircraft as you will be a common target due to the open turret.
If you need to turn the turret, turn the rest of the tank along with the turret. (If you wanted to turn your turret toward the right, for example, you'd want to point your mouse to the right and and the same time hold the 'D' button to turn the rest of the tank).
Armor is surprisingly decent, but your competition is Stug IIIs, Panzer IV F2s/Gs/Hs/Js, and T-34s, so try not to have close-engagements.
