Lancaster bomber
Hi All,

Haven't played in a while. Might come back to it. I'm pretty early on in RAF aircraft line and German tank line.

Approximately how long does it take an average player to unlock the Lancaster bomber and is it worth it.

Hows the game playing these days? I'm after something a little more simulatory but with a high population. This seems like an ok mix.

Thanks

Well since they added the Halifax and the stirlings before the lanc it'll be a while before you get to it. However all three of those are great at base bombing, especially the Halifax. Assuming you need to work through the entire British bomber line I'd say a week or hard grinding to get the lanc. Maybe a little more dpepending on how many games you play a day.

Don't play bombers, unless you have a bomber that can raze a base in one run and you have premium it's not worth it. Just farm planes, brits have the spitfires and typhoons to keep them busy.

I agree with this, if you fly in a squad and have 2 covering a bomber while it gets to 6000m though at tier 2-3 you'll have lots of fun with it. The Canberra at Tier 5 is awesome for fast RP/Lions but once shot down cost 18k to fix it!

And as expected someone tells this guy to not play bombers unless it can bomb a lot and have premium(Not a must since they are already easy enough to farm)
Meanwhile the OP is asking for if a certain bomber which can certainly raise hell on bases is worth it or not.

This is an open discussion, and i have a valid point on this subject. I got a million useless lions from bombers. fighters are alot more fun to use and are alot more rewarding.

So I came back to the game. I play a lot of battle of stalingrad and Cliffs of Dover. War Thunder arcade dogfights are fun enough I guess but I'm probably going to stick to bombers. I prefer more realistic flight models so the fighters don't really appeal. However, you just don't get the wide variety of aircraft in most other games (especially bombers) compared to War Thunder, and so here I am, back in War Thunder.

There's ways you can use the lancasters quite effictively but its almost always a suicide run from my expierence. You might have a better chance if you have a squad of lancs or escort, but unless you can do that the most effictive tactic is to just make shallow dives towards bases and kill as many as you can until you get swarmed by fighters. Add this also to the fact that in most cases bombers grant you much lesser rewards than being a skilled fighter pilot.

I still bring it out in custom battles from time to time though or use it in the mission editor. Admittidly, the lancaster was the aircraft i most wanted ever since i started the game and i got it for its looks and pride more than anything else. Took almost 2 years of dropping out the game, filling other tech trees, losing motivation until i finaly got it. You could as others have said get it within 1-2 weeks. Was all the time worth it? Couldn't really tell you, but im glad i have it atleast.

I love the Lanc, it's my favourite bomber. I use it in AB. As for the rewards, I use mine when I want to farm lions. A quiet game is 25k-30k. 1 in 5 games is 150k+, that's when you get a base or two and start hitting the airfield. If you can destroy an airfield, just sit back and watch the SL & RP climb through the roof! 20k RP is so so good to see. The Lanc has my highest average for SL and RP per flyout. I put a talisman on mine early on and have used it to research aircraft fast, as well as move it around my crew slots to max their skills out quickly. (NB. I have premium account)

Research to the 14 x 1000lb bombs first and use this bomb load as it has the highest TNT total. I can't remember, but I think you need 11 or 12 of the1000lb bombs to destroy a full base.

When flying it, fly to either the left or right hand base while climbing, watch the enemy team and the direction they're going. If you have a lot of climbing enemy fighters, dive as most won't follow you, you can usually get one full base if they do follow you, that's between 25k-30k SL. If you have climbing friendly fighters, follow them across the map as they'll clear the way, they also appreciate how enemy fighters focus on your Lanc and leave themselves as easy targets to be shot down. Every now and then, I get shot down before being able to do anything, but not often.

I have a Lanc lineup with both of them and the BR is 5.0. If you get shot down, watch the flow of the game to see if you should bring your second Lanc out. If the enemy has altitude superiority, there's no point. Grab a fighter and have some fun until the skies clear.

I targeted the Lanc and Mosquito when I first started WT. I was not disappointed in getting them. It takes a bit of practice to fly them right, but they can be very successful. When you see your name at the top of the leaderboard with over 80 tons of TNT, it feels fantastic. :-)

Thanks yea I'm enjoying bombing. Only I have one question. How do I enter bombsight view or have the bomber flying on autopilot while acting as bombardier. I've seen videos on youtube of people doing high level bombing using a bomb reticle but I can't find it in the control options. Theres bomber view (F7) but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Press V. It auto levels if it can, unless you're damaged you're going to use your alieron to do the work.

As Stinger said, default is V. You scroll through the different views available to you, so keep pressng until you get the view you want. I have mine on F4, standard view is F2. That allows me to switch quickly/easily. I have my bombs on key 1 (not space bar) as that makes it a bit easier too.
