The Rooikat 105: Probably the most regrettable purchase I've made
Everything about the Rooikat 105 looked promising to me. It was marketed as fast and nimble with a decent cannon, and a very good flanker. I purchased it, and I regret it immensely.

It is advertised with a top speed of 74mph. It might achieve this, going downhill on a road with the wind gods blessing. I've been doing testing, and this thing realistically achieves 39mph on the roads of Berlin. 39mph, on a flat road. It also requires an extremely long distance to accelerate, which reduces that maximum speed further. I've got WW2 half tracks that put this thing to shame, considering they both share about the same armor ratings.

It becomes even worse when off-roading. Maximum speed on a flat surface (a farm, for instance) gets you to about 27-29 MPH before the engine calls it quits. This is just absurd for a vehicle with "extremely good mobility" (courtesy of the War Thunder Wiki) at the 8.7 BR. I mean for gods sake, this thing gets outrun by the Cromwell V, the medium tank for the British tree at RANK 3! The tank that is just about 50 years older than the Rooikat, and that weighs the same.

This armored car cannot climb hills with a 45 degree incline or higher, especially offroad. This was surprising, considering that this thing comes equipped with eight offroading tires and it's weight of only 28 tons. Imagine me thinking I could pull a flanking maneuver across a river and finding out that I can't because a short, light incline has stopped me dead on my tires.

There's also the matter of camouflage. This thing only has desert camo, and tricolor camo. You won't find forest camouflage, which is a huge problem when you're painted bright yellow on a map of dark greens. There are several maps that I straight up can't play because I stick out like a sore thumb, while the enemy and my allies blend in like actual plants.

Literally the only redeeming quality about this tank is it's 105mm gun and it's thermal cameras, but even the thermal camera gives me a headache as it turns the world into a black and white 8-bit mesh of pixels that makes it just as difficult to see through the camera as it would if I put a bucket over my head.

Arcade mode is literally mandatory to have fun with this tank, as every other game mode makes me feel like I've committed to a horrendous waste of money.

Test drive it next time before you buy it

Thank you wonderful citizen, for telling me how useful a flat grassy plane with 5 stationary targets is to fully evaluating the performance and capabilities of a premium vehicle. You are truly the Profound Prometheus of these steam forums.

Especially helpful seeing as you posted that comment within 45 seconds of clicking on this thread. Truly the pinnacle of intelligent thought and well reasoned responses.

Now to stop with the witty sarcasm, I genuinely did not know that and will attempt to find these other test drive scenarios to avoid making poor purchases. I also made the purchase based on the google searches I made about the tank, with the first 10 search results being used. These are obviously outdated or blatant lies.

These kind of mbts only work well on very good players, in the hands of a skill player these will destroy nonstop...
This is not for anyone, it takes alot of skill to know how to play it...

Any tank can work very well if the player is very good. That's not an excuse to underperform when compared to the base stats that it's reported to have. That also does not make it a good vehicle.
It's also not an MBT, it's an armored car given a tank destroyer's 105.

Change the thermals into "green thermals" in the options. You have options for negative (B&W), green and red. Take a look in there every so often, new stuff is added all the time and its USEFUL.

Also Arcade mode is where its weakest, in RB these tanks can be monsters.
The Centauro is slower than the Rooikat and I can massacre in that thing with the stock apds (not apfsds)... haven't even unlocked heat yet.

The thing is, inexperienced players shouldn't buy premiums or into top tier in general, they have no idea of the gameplay and the changed mechanics compared to lower tier and they suffer... they also cause the teams to suffer because of their inexperience, which altogether makes the entire game worse. :*

Good to see you glazed over the important parts to nitpick and deliver me a complicated version of the "get good" speech.

Important facts: the listed maximum speed is literally half of the practical maximum speed.

The tank gets shredded by 12.7mm from 200+ meters

It literally can't climb a hill inclined at more than 40 degrees. I've checked and double checked on multiple maps under multiple conditions. It just can't be used as an effective flanker this way.

Thermals in any color degrade the resolution of the game until it's a blob of pixels, hence I don't use it unless I absolutely need to.

It has no green camouflage despite being advertised as having it, meaning it can't be disguised effectively on any maps that are primarily forest/jungle/grasslands (14/38 maps).

Unless you'd like to contribute any meaningful information, perhaps reasons for it's underperformance in RBs, I really don't need you to give me the "get good noob" speech again. I have 450+ hours on this game and if that isn't enough to qualify me for an opinion, no one is qualified.

Stat card top speeds are for on-road OPTIMAL conditions with full upgrades installed. ALL vic in WT suffer reduced top speed off-raod, i'm lucky to hit 60KPH in my T-80U on flat terrain off-road even tho IRL the T-80U can hit 75KPH on roads. Furthermore wheeled vics in wt and IRL suffer MASSIVELY in performance off-road, due to higher ground pressure they sink into the surface and have trouble gaining traction. Tracked vics are undoubtedly superior anywhere but on-road. Also it's NOT a tank it's an APC with a tank turret slapped to the roof. It's not even armoured to resist .50 IRL, only small arms.

The testing undergone by this tank reflects it being fully upgraded with a lvl 45 crew under perfect conditions. It is a premium tank, so it starts with all modifications researched.

As i stated before, this tank reaches maximum speed at roughly half the given cap when on a road going in a straight line, on a perfectly flat map. To reach its given top speed it would need to be dropped from the upper stratosphere and even then I'd have my doubts, as it would probably break physics in order to move a little slower. I also said it was an armored car, but considering how slow it is you would think it would at least have the armor to resist the secondary weapons on other vehicles.

If you read my opening thread you would have understood this.

I guess Phlys video he posted yesterday or so where he was in the grass going slightly uphill at 58kph was faked then.
Berry May 27, 2020 @ 9:01pm
PhlyDaily did not play the Rooikat yesterday. I think you got the wrong tank.

Edit: just double-checked because I also watch Phly, he was testing the new American HSTV-L. The Rooikat is a Tier VI British armored car.

Except Phly also played the Rooikat 5 months ago. He easily gets up to 47 kmph off-road in the vanilla Testing Grounds (RB) and 92 kmph on-road in Poland (in AB, so 74 kmph on-road for RB is easily attainable.)

Maybe you you try know more about the vehicule you buy, watching videos, ground testing it, looking feedback on it, tips before rushing to your mom credit card. It will avoid regrets and missunderstood, and we won't have to see you crying here

You remember when the Rooikat was on its own research line (meaning, you do not have to research the previous vehicle before purchasing this one)? Well, I had put in something like 250,000 RP into it, then Gaijin, in all their brilliance, shoved it underneath the two useless ATGM carriers that I don't have. Now I can't buy the Rooikat, and I've wasted my time grinding.
