look at all the bomb loads available and notice in the bomb statistics it says 'tnt equivilent' or something along those lines, so multiply that number by the number of that given bomb you carry and that is the damage you will do to a base. so now you know you can work out which is best for yourself
The reason to go for more/lighter bombs are when you need to strike multiple targets (ie: tanks) ... but lately the changes to the bombs several months ago made them devastate the sky instead (specifically, your bomber if you're flying above your blast) while doing practically no damage to the surrounding area. Because of this, bombers have been forced to stick to the heavier bombs to ensure a kill on a tank, and even then it is still frustrating to pull it off.
actually not necissarily true, read my post above, most bombs in the game are general purpose bombs with aproximatly 50% of their weight in the casing, exact weight varies which is why you need to check the actual tnt equivilents and work it out, in many cases more smaller bombs can be more efficient
edit: ok heres a shortcut https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Px6G3kvcWbiS-sdIR6r4s7lSwfcxguUgJw95qj0NIzs/edit#gid=0 , notice for the US it takes 7 x 500lb bombs to kill a base compared to 4 x 1000lb, if you can take twice as many 500s as 1000s then the 500s net you more
They work really well in an attacker role, and it'll be much better for both you and your team.
General rule of thumb with bombers is that if you can't singlehandedly destroy at least 2 bases in 1 run, it's not worth it to bomb bases.
For the 3 years I've played, the only time I saw anything short of a heavy bomber win a game by destroying bases was when we had a team of nothing but catalinas.
I HAVE however, seen as few as 2 Ju-87 Gs end a game just by wiping out AI tanks.
To put it simply, it's uncommon for bombers to pump out more than 1 run, and damn rare for them to make 3 or more, so you need to get as much out of your first run as possible.
quite recently i saw a team of b25s and p61s bomb my teams bases and airfield out in one run. it has its uses
But unless you have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of people coordinated and dedicated, it's not going to happen.
And everyone knows how terrible your average US team is.
given the OPs question was specifically about bombing bases and we are given no further information about whther or not he is forming a squad of bombers i simply gave him the information he asked for and made no further assumptions
