Gamepad symbols

I can't seem to find the setting to shut off the symbols that indicate what button to press on your xbox controller and the indicator for using the joystick to navigate through the menu.

how do you turn this off?

note: i do not have a gamepad or controller plugged in, just KB&M

Do you use the big picture mode?

menu -> game options -> interface -> use interface with gamepad (2nd option from the top)

Note: that will not work if you start through the big picture mode because then this option is not available.
