12.7 SAFAT
Is it supposed to be less effective than throwing rotten fruit?

I find it to be deadly, but only at very close distances. Past that, it can struggle due to the low velocity and quick loss of energy that the round goes through.

what vehicles is it on?

Almost every Italian plane. It would be much better if it had the rounds it used in real life, but it and the Japanese 12.7 lack them.

I stick to as much API in these belts as I can. Unless the aircraftbim flying also has 20mm MG151s, then I throw on stealth belts and pretend like the 12.7mms don’t exist :lunar2019deadpanpig:

No even the Italian 12.7mm is better than 7.7mms, you get API rounds which tend to perform better than straight AP, at least in my experience.

It does. The IAI round in the Air belt is supposed to be the "mini-HE" round that people talk about from what Gaijin tells us. That round got a major buff just before the Italian tree came out IIRC, and it seems to still work very well. I took the Re.2000GA out for a quick spin, to see if Gaijin did anything funny with Italian MGs lately, and honestly, I managed to absolutely wreck the other team! Took out at least 4 guys on a single belt before flying back to repair.

Of course, as I said, the armament is very low velocity that needs to be fired at a close range for the best effect. From personal experience, 250m or less is ideal, 400m is where the damage potential seems to bleed off significantly. In headons, if a situation really comes down to that, it's pretty good at regular Tier 1 and early Tier 2 standoff range.

It does become essentially more useless as you go higher in the tree though, but that's because planes get better armored by then. The MG.151/20s are used more by this point though.

It should be noted, that in real life, was not really well liked as well simply because of the low velocity and slow firing. I recall reading somewhere the Croats hated the guns when they got C.202s, and I think even the allies commented on how the armament was really a letdown from the rest of the plane.

What they did to the Japanese planes though, agree, totally criminal. I don't exactly understand why they had to do that...

I've sworn off the italian trees completely. ♥♥♥♥ the safat I'd rather have two 7.62 machine guns

I'd rather have a skhas or whatever it is called machinegun from a chaika than that 12.7mm joke. Hell even the Ho-103 feels more powerful while using the same bullets.

Ho-103 should have more Kinetic Energy than the Breda SAFAT if their muzzle velocity means anything. The damage potential should be improved at longer ranges compared to the Breda SAFAT.

Meanwhile the ShKAZ is one heck of a weapon. Despite the rifle calibre, it has a very high Rate of Fire, and with full API-T belts has a chance of starting fires that's above average.

Also thought of another possibility. What mode are most people playing the Italians in? When I used to play Arcade more, i really struggled to even get anything damaged due to the buffed damage models.

Long after I started RB, i randomly did some reading on the Breda and how to use it, picked up some of the planes that used them, and had a blast, even more so after they buffed it! The key to using the Breda up to around BR3.7 is really rely on it on close range attacks. Past that, planes tend to have MG-151/20s and can easily rely with that, especially when they have the Mine round that makes it one of the most lethal and popular cannons that are aircraft mounted in the game!
