Panther A vs Panther D
Is the Panther A even worth getting if I have a Panther D with every modification and an expert crew? Just seems like the Panther A exposes a weakpoint, that being a bow gun mount.

It is optional. All you need to research the next tank is the research the previous one
If you are asking which is objectively better, than it's not optional. The Panther A is.

The Panther A is overpowered at 5.7. It has two minor disadvantages, which are weak sides (*cough*notunique*cough*) and poor reverse (like the D also).

It has the same HP/t as a T-34-85.

It has less than 1°/s turret traverse than a Sherman.

It has more frontal armour than almost, if not every heavy tank at 5.7 effective.

It has 189mm of penetration at 10m, with AP(HE)CBC.

It has the trinity of mobility, firepower, and armour, while sacrificing almost nothing in return. It has the firepower to easily dispatch any 5.7 at any range, the accuracy to do so, the armour to, not be immune, but very strong frontally at 5.7 and give even the better 5.7 guns a good run if loosely aimed, and the mobility to compete with the other mediums at it’s BR with it’s other advantages.

Not to mention, it has the Panther D (pretty much the same, but slower and with poor turret rotation and no APCR), Tiger I series, and more as backups, with great CAS, making an amazing lineup.

I honestly believe the reason this tank isn’t pulling 70% winrates is
>often CQC and small maps
>BR compression, often uptiers
>5.7 is popular with Germany, so often uptiers are a team of 80-90% 5.7 Germans vs 70-80% 6.0, 6.3, 6.7 Russian/US/UK/etc. tanks.

I honestly believe it is that good. All issues it has, except for the two very minor ‘less than average side armour’ and ‘poor reverse’ are overal related issues, not with the tank.
These would all be great reasons to purchase it but I already have the Tiger 2 (P) so I'd get uptiered alot in it so I might as well just be using the Panther D

In that case, I recommend the Panther A even harder.

At 6.7, the armour doesn’t mean anything. However, it has APCR, which the 7.5cm cannot penetrate the mantlet of tanks like the T29 without it.

Along with this, mobility of a tank with poor armour is more important, and the A has the mobility. Better engine and better turret traverse, it will still keep up mobility wise, while the Panther A will feel like a heavy tank that’s been uptiered and lost it’s armour in comparison — the Panther D at 6.7 won’t have the mobility to keep up, flank, get back into position as fast (presuming it’s a backup), and it’s armour advantage is useless. While the Panther A, with the same armour, and the same gun (with APCR this time) has the engine power to keep up with a T-34-85, and can flank and reposition.

The Panther A will undoubtedly be a better tank as a 6.7 backup than the Panther D. The D has nothing on it, and the most important advantage for a medium tank brought into an uptier, mobility, is missing in comparison.
You make a damn good argument
The panther A is better than the panther D do to it better turret rotation. Out of all the panthers the panther A has the fast turret rotation
The A variant is better, due to fast turret rotation and the tiny extra turret armor helps.

It's still not optional as it's required to research to progress through the tech tree.
I meant optional as in you don't HAVE to purchase it, I meant it as in you only gotta research the previous one to advance in the tech tree.

No, it’s required to purchase. Otherwise you cannot buy the vehicle after it (you can research it, but not buy it).

The training cost is the optional part, which is only a fraction of the main SL cost anyways.
Both get killed enmasse by M18s, pick whichever one you prefer, though the D has a better turret.

The panther A has a much faster engine, and a substantially better scope, even if you like the Panther D playstyle you can still take the A in a similar role, you'll just be substantially more versatile, at the cost of having to fully spade the panther A, but trust me it doesn't take that long in it
It is worth getting, I can't believe it sits at the same BR as the D. Probably BR compression.

wheraboos, it's sooooo much better than it's bootleg counterpart

BR compression, but also just this. I talismaned the thing when it was 6.0, it was fine.
