Which ammunition type is better for the tier 1 german tanks?

I'd stick with the APCBC under 2.0, anything higher and you'll probably want to take some HEAT rounds. I'd still take a few (>10) for hullbreaking LVTs and such though. After the Panzer IV F1 I wouldn't bother with them anymore though, as everything past that has far superior APCBC rounds.

My personal preference was to use APHE (when available). I'd rather give up pen at longer ranges than deal with HEATwantign to detonate on bushes/trees/fences/buildings - and do nothing to the tank sitting behind them. HEATs slower velocity can make aiming at longer ranges a bit harder. HEAT is fine, if the target is in the open.

I agree with Scheneighnay, the HEAT on the short 75mm will one-shot just as well as the APHE, and will also make short work of more heavily armoured tanks like the B1.

HEAT ammunition’s have high penetration but low after-penetration damage and APHE is pretty much the opposite.

This too, unless the APHE is horrible, I'll try to use HEAT at long range, and APHE in towns where I'll be firing at point blank or through fences

APHE for general usage

HEAT for long range or difficult to pen. targets.

E.g If I carry 20 shells, 16 of them would be APHE and 4 would be HEAT.
