Edit- I have both tanks and its just one of the most glaring advantages to point out.
I did get the T-44-122 at a 75% discount though, and I do like the tank.
It's not overpowered by any stretch of the imagination, but it is basically a better IS-2 (mobility wise, which seems to be the thing that always gets me killed in the IS-2). The mobility is its saving grace, there's moments when I would shoot a Tiger 2 for example, not kill him, then be able to get out of his line of sight and round the building until my shell was reloaded and kill him while he had no chance turn his gun on me. Basically, the tank is a mini IS-2 on a T-44 chasis.
I would imagine the IS-6 is probably the "better" grinding tank and is more viable at higher tiers, but I don't have it so you would have to listen to what others here have to say.
I'd Google each tank and see what other people say about it recently, just to get a really good idea which tank you want.
The IS-6 isn’t bad, (it’s really, really good), but what I like about the T-44-122:
Mobility of a light tank, feels faster than a T-34 or the T-44-85.
Armour is good, 75mm RHA at 90 degrees, but it has weakspots and such — the armour is unreliably good. I do not play like I have armour, play like a Russian M18 (not as fast but still pretty fast), but you’ll actually get lots of bounces. Like half of shots, or even more, bounce.
The gun: 122mm kills everything. It’s the same gun, but at 6.3 and not 7.3. If you penetrate, you incinerate. And penetration isn’t that hard, just don’t aim for hardspots like the Tiger II UFP and such, and it’ll kill everything.
The disadvantage is the reload: I mean the only reason it isn’t like 6.7 or 7.0 is because of the half minute reload (like 22 seconds w/ max reload skills/leadership and elited crew), and the only time this tank doesn’t get fun is if you loose your loader, now you have the reload of a KV-2.
However, I like this: instead of having a rapid fire 85mm with 150 some mm of penetration and a good APHE filler, the T-44-122 instead can pop out and just utterly obliterate an opponent, and instead of now worrying about bouncing and him shooting, or you not killing and having to reload, etc, the T-44-122 does the opposite of this, and can just backup and reload using the best armour there is: buildings and hills.
The other last main advantage of the T-44-122: 6.3. 6.3 is just a great lineup. You have the 122, now you have the base T-44, IS-2 obr. 1944, ASU-85, SU-100, and tonnes of great 5.0-6.0 backups, plus the Tu-2-44, Tu-2-59, the only 6.3 jet in the game, or trade it out with a fighter with bombs like the I-185 or the La-7. From my experience: like over half my battles are downtiers. It’s great. While like only a quarter of battles are uptiers to only say 6.7. Russia 6.3 is probably the best lineup.
Both the IS-6 and T-44-122 are good for grinding, and the IS-6 is extremely good. But I choose the T-44-122, simply because it is more fun. The gun is the same 1.0 below, better lineup (7.3 is good for USSR too, but not as much as 6.3, and it gets uptiered to 7.7 more often than 6.3 gets uptiered, along with the rare 8.3 battles bringing tanks with darts), the gameplay is really enjoyable, at least to me (basically a US-style Russian turreted TD), and I just like it.
As well, I can’t recommend the IS-6 simply because of it’s BR. BR compression doesn’t make 7.3 fun that much, and you face MBTs from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Combined with this: it’s rank 4. If you want something that high, I recommend going say .3 BR higher and getting like the Ob’yekt 120 or something, that can actually research rank 6. The IS-6 is an amazing tank, still probably a little Op, and especially in downtiers or in SB, it just totally clubs... but frankly I like the T-44-122 better, it’s just a more enjoyable tank that is fun to play, more enjoyable lineup, at a still decent BR, and can research the same stuff just fine.
