If you plan on shooting ground targets, it’s completely effective, but if you’re going for air targets usually the preferred is Omni, Tracers (API-T belt), and stealth.

Tracers is a lot of people’s favorite as API-T is good, however because of the rate of fire + for the P47 having 8 MGs, it’ll actually kind of blind you from the shear number of tracers. It’s a good belt but I don’t like them because of this, and of course like with all tracer belts the enemy sees the bullets coming. If the belt option says (API-T-T-T) or whatever, like a lot of the naval planes and low rank 1-2 planes have, these tracer belts are not as good at all. However the API-T kind of has a flamethrower like effect - it’s easy to set things on fire.

Omni is the one I like if I need tracers, tracers every like 4th bullet means you get plenty of tracers but you don’t completely shower the general area with so many tracers it’s hard to concentrate on what is actually hitting the target and all. As well, non-tracer belts usually do marginally better damage as AP-I I think does a fractionally better damage. Omni is the generally good go-to belt for all aircraft anyways.

Stealth is usually the best belt 80% of the time on all aircraft, stealth is like Omni but with no tracers, so the enemy doesn’t see the bullets. If you’re good with .50s, stealth is recommended, it is also good for ground targets too, so it is kind of like Ground Targets 2 without tracers and more effective against planes than ground targets.

Ground targets is a bit opsolete anyways, stealth and Omni does what it does just fine while still being very effective against aircraft. As well, frankly aircraft guns are generally ineffective against tanks: you’re just going to be using these against open topped and unarmored vehicles anyways, maybe some light tanks and APCs once and awhile.

first of all thank you very much for writing this essay for a stranger on steam :D
honestly m8 this is something noone has ever done for me.
second of all while reading this i thoughbt about having stealth because of having 100% useful bullets rather than having 75 good ones and 25% tracers. i really dont understand which belt is omni but im gonna be using stealth from now on
but i think using anti aircraft ammo for p51 is the way to go :D

If you thought that was an essay, you should really see some of the other things I’ve written before...

AP-T still hits ok but API-T I should say hits less like a bullet but more of like a tiny FI-T shell, API-T is more of a ‘catch enemy on fire’ bullet than a bullet bullet.

Which I would probably add:
I said I personally don’t like the tracers due to the shear amount of tracers, but actually one thing I could add - if in Rb you get a US vs Japan map, it actually might be better to take them. Since it’s like a flamethrower belt, API-T is nasty against Japanese aircraft, speaking from both ends. They don’t have self sealing fuel tanks, and frankly I think it isn’t until the reach the Ki-200 they found out that Rocket fuel is best inside the aircraft instead of an exterior skin paint or something. If you get a Japan map, it actually might be beneficial to change belts specifically to Tracers, as all it does is take a tap to turn an A6M into a mini-Hindenburg. But otherwise, I personally like Omni and Stealth, if in ground RB if you really want the extra damage to ground targets which isn’t at all necessary, you can take Ground Targets (I mean, they are still effective against aircraft just fine), but in my opinion I just take stealth.

forgot to mention, i only play arcades because i dont have much time or nerves for realistic ones, but thank you very much for these tips

Ok, take some of this with a little skepticism then - I am not sure how much translates into AB, this is all from RB and SB for me. Although I can’t imagine it would be too much different.

I use anti-ground target bullets on enemy aircraft and I just shred them to pieces. if you want to do as much damage to enemy aircraft as possible, it's the ammo that gets the job done

Always look at the contents of the belt, not the name.
In some cases, "ground targets" is mostly AP, in others, it's mostly HE. Typically HE is what you want against planes.

For HE vs HEF, HE does more damage to the components of the plane, while HEF is more likely to kill crew members.
